A passionate professor spars with a new student. Stars Kevin Kline, Emile Hirsch. Special DVD features include a director's commentary, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, production notes.

At St. Benedict's prep school, the boys are disciplined, mannered, and ready to learn. But when a bad apple enters the classroom of the well-respected Mr. Hundert (Kevin Kline), chaos ensues. Sedgewick Bell (Emile Hirsch, DANGEROUS LIVES OF ALTAR BOYS) is a kid with a chip on his shoulder and a powerful senator for a father. He is a shock to the system of Mr. Hundert, whose firm moral standards and unshakeable integrity are genuinely challenged by Sedgewick's eye-rolling, rule-breaking, uncaring insubordination. Determined to change Sedgewick, "mold him," and bring out the strong and true character that he believes to be at the core of every student, Mr. Hundert makes Sedgewick his priority. However, their bond will remain a thorn in Mr. Hundert's side for years thereafter, even beyond his retirement. Based on a short story by Ethan Canin, and directed by Michael Hoffman, THE EMPEROR'S CLUB uses crisp photography and convincing performances to communicate this wholesome tale of honor, morality, and trying to do what's right at all costs.

Theatrical release: November 22, 2002

5 stars A really good message!
This is one of these movies that leaves a great message: Ethics. Really good for young people, it helps them see that ethics is not an old matter, it's a rule for life.

Bryan Ferry Boys And Girls CD  (1985) Remastered

Emperor's Club film
CD $11.69  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so. Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a glove. The album's soundscapes are lush and echo-laden, and nearly every track has a discreet disco pulse; "Valentine," the one exception, is mid-tempo reggae. Overlaid with skittish percussion and guitars, BOYS AND GIRLS is the aural equivalent of a white dinner jacket and a half-empty bottle of champagne. Personnel: Bryan Ferry (vocals, harmonica, piano); Bryan Ferry; Alfa Anderson Barfield (vocals); Alan Spenner, Mark Knopfler, Neil Hubbard (guitar); Omar Hakim (drums); Chester Kamen, David Gilmore, David ...

Laura Branigan Self Control CD  (1984)

Emperor's Club review
CD $6.09  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples (MP3 Available for Download)
Laura Branigan's third album capitalized on the Euro-dance-pop and affecting ballads that made her an international star while allowing her to grow as a vocalist. Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception."The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest hit. The song itself works, but Branigan was never a sex bomb, so the fact that she pulls it off is indicative of her power as a performer. "Ti Amo" is the album's theatrical ballad, which works well with breathy, dramatic vocals. She even pulls off a graceful cover of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" that is clear and simple, while "Breaking Out" and "Take Me" are perfect examples of synthesizer-driven '80s dance ditties. The only slow moments come with "Silent Partners" and "With Every Beat of My Heart," and that's not because they're ballads. The production bogs them down, and the lyrics are so pedestrian, ...

Rick Springfield Living In Oz CD  (1983)

Emperor's Club video
CD $5.95  4 stars Top 500 (MP3 Available for Download)
Though this was Rick Springfield's ninth album, it seemed like the third to most pop music fans, as it came on the heels of his breakthrough, Working Class Dog, and its successful follow-up, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet. And though this contained as many hits as the aforementioned collections, it isn't remembered as quite the same in terms of accomplishment; this may be because it is so personal that it's just not as accessible. Living in Oz is Springfield's response to the dance-pop wave that was just starting to build and would be prominent until grunge announced its presence, as well as his response to the naysayers who wouldn't accept him as a serious musician. Where earlier hits, like "Jessie's Girl" and "Don't Talk to Strangers," were well-crafted pop tunes, on this release he shows an edge and a maturity he hadn't before. By embracing the synthesizers he also shows contempt for, he is able to illustrate how they're changing music ...

In Clint Eastwood's MYSTIC RIVER, a murder mystery in South Boston unites three men who have been friends since childhood. Grippingly powerful performances from the entire cast--Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Marcia Gay Harden, Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne, and Laura Linney--combined with gritty photography, an exceptionally emotional script, and a convincing working-class Boston setting make this film one of Eastwood's most consistent and penetrating works. Though they live in the same houses where they grew up, Jimmy (Penn), Dave (Robbins), and Sean (Bacon) have drifted apart over time. Their distance is due to a disturbing and violent episode that occurred when they were ...
