That Cape Verde's Césaria Évora is justifiably called the Queen of Morna, the music with the lilting ache, is beyond question; she can convey emotion in a small inflection of her voice. But the woman also known as the Barefoot Diva is just as surefooted on the more up-tempo coladeiras, and both styles are well represented on this compilation, which pulls from several of her albums over an 11-year period. The tracks of real interest, though, are those that have never seen the light of day before, including a new version of her trademark tune, "Sodade," featuring a duet vocal from Angola's Bonga that adds little to her original version. "Fala Pa Fala" takes her more into Afro-Cuban territory, rhythmically sprung but not especially memorable, and "Embaracaçao," another duet, this time with Polish singer Kayah, proves equally forgettable. In fact, of the bonus tracks, only one, the lilting "Fidjo Maguado," is the equal of her best work. Those ...

In 2004 Wounded Bird combined Louise Goffin's first two albums on one disc. Her debut, 1979's Kid Blue suffered by unfair comparison to her mother Carole King's work. "Not as good as Tapestry" was the lazy, myopic verdict, and the album failed to take off. What no one thought to point out was that Goffin was 16-years-old at the time, while King made Tapestry in her late twenties. A more sensible comparison could have been drawn by measuring Kid Blue against King's first recording Baby Sittin', made when she was 16. By that score, Kid Blue is a commendable effort; Goffin's lyrical concerns -- apart from the teen bluster of "Jimmy and the Tough Kids" -- are far more ambitious than King's adolescent Brill Building records, and both Goffin, on vocals, piano, and guitar, and her band turn in sophisticated, polished performances. True, the songs (mostly written or co-written by Goffin) are good, rather than brilliant.
