This rerelease of the alt-rock band's PROXIMITY EFFECT includes three bonus tracks.
After scoring the hit "Popular" off its successful 1996 debut record, HIGH/LOW, Nada Surf ran into the hardest of brick walls. While THE PROXIMITY EFFECT built on the fiery, jagged indie power pop of its predecessor, life after a novelty hit can be rough. Their major label, unsure how to market the record, decided not to release it, but also refused to relinquish the masters to the band. After years of dispute, the band could easily have retreated into cynicism and depression, and rumor has it that they did, to a degree. However, they also persevered, and ultimately bought the rights back and self-released the album.
It's a good thing they did, as THE PROXIMITY EFFECT is a delectable slice of indie rock. Opening track and single "Hyperspace" boasts the perfect singalong hook and the fevered guitar rock that dominated the first record. However, tracks like "Amateur" and "The Voices" uncover a band lost in thought, reflective, but ultimately upbeat. While the record was overlooked by most of radio and the public, it did catch the ear of college radio and then Barsuk Records, sowing the seeds of the band's unlikely revival.
Mid-price reissue of the alternative rocker's previously deleted title from 1998 includes three bonus tracks, 'Silent Fighting', 'Spooky', 'Firecracker' (Video), & a virtual studio tour. Heavenly. 2003.Uncut (5/03, p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...An album of genre hopping alt.rock full of firecracker melodies and heart-stopping hooks..." Proximity Effect album
$15.59 On Quake, downtown cello boss Erik Friedlander teams up with Japan's fraternal rhythm section the Takeishi brothers (Stomu and Satoshi on bass and drums, respectively) as well as alto saxophonist Andy Laster for a date of intimate, knotty new jazz. In working with an electric bassist in this setting, the opportunities for unique tonalities are everywhere and are exploited to some degree as they were on an earlier work, The Watchman. Over the years, however, Friedlander has become a composer of interesting ensembles and Quake's is no exception. What is so remarkable about the performances on this recording are details such as counterpoint; on the opener, Laster and Stomu have equal opportunities to engage Friedlander and each other for a knotty, but exhilarating, ride. On the erratically paced and wonderfully breathless "Wire," Friedlander brings shades of different jazz eras and styles to comprise the body of the composition while intense harmonic invention takes places in each musician's solo. The title cut uses Israeli folk themes to construct an ebb-and-flow narrative statement that engages elements of modal jazz, post-bop, klezmer, smoky, simmering funk, and other Middle Eastern music on its ride into ecstasy. Ultimately, Quake is a newer and finer example ...
| | Paul Brody Beyond Babylon CD (2004)
Proximity Effect CD music
$13.35 On his second album fronting his band Sadawi, trumpeter and composer Paul Brody continues his work in the avant-klezmer trenches, helping to drag that hundred-year-old music kicking and screaming into the 21st century. On Beyond Babylon he shows his unwillingness to be constrained by any ghetto boundaries, opening the album with an extended deconstruction of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" (which features a hair-raisingly skronky banjo solo by Brandon Seabrook), and making use of elements of both dub (on the contemplative and lovely "Timepeace"), and rock (note the guitar parts on "Fragment of Kafka's Friend") as well as lots and lots of modern jazz. Most of the album is thrilling; Brody's take on the David Krakauer composition "Klezmer à la Bechet" is a joyful romp in five/four meter, "Glass Dance" is a masterful chamber jazz excursion featuring guest Alan Bern on melodica; Brody's own "An Eye for a You" struts out ...

Proximity Effect music CDs
$31.99 In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader.
KAGEMUSHA marked a welcome return for the legendary director, who had not made a movie since 1974. Nakadai, a supporting player in earlier Kurosawa films, expertly portrays the leading role(s), almost always filled in the past by Toshirô Mifune. KAGEMUSHA also features the final screen appearance of longtime Kurosawa actor, Takashi Shimura. In order to help the film get an international release, ...
