THE UPSETTER [REMASTER] includes eight previously unreleased bonus tracks.
Originally released in 1969 on Jamaican reggae genius Lee "Scratch" Perry's own Upsetter label and reissued in 1996 as part of a Trojan reissue series that also included the essential early albums RETURN OF DJANGO, EASTWOOD RIDES AGAIN, AFRICA'S BLOOD, and DOUBLE SEVEN. THE UPSETTER is classic early reggae. Considered revolutionary in Jamaican music circles at the time, the aggressive yet tight instrumentals might sound at first a bit thin and trebly to new listeners used to the booming bass overload of contemporary reggae, but the interplay of dazzling organist Glen Adams, guitarist Alva Lewis, and the rhythm section of brothers Carlton and Aston Barrett cannot be duplicated with the sequencers and electronics so prevalent in current Jamaican music, especially on wild grooves like "Night Doctor." Guest spots by singers Busty Brown and the Silvertones and saxophonist Val Bennett add to the excitement.
Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1969 album that heralded the arrival of Jamaica's greatest producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry. This expanded edition of the album features eight bonus tracks including 'Untitled Instrumental', 'Slow Motion Version 2', 'Big Noise' (takes 3-6) and 'Thunderball' (takes 3-5). Trojan.
Includes liner notes by David Katz.

Upsetter album
$12.05 Perhaps more than any other Jamaican singer, Jimmy Cliff always had his sights set on the international market, and while he obviously works from a reggae base, his sound -- featuring full productions often cushioned with strings -- completely defines what has come to be known as reggae-pop. Ironically, given that it was his contemporary Bob Marley who broke through to become reggae's icon, Cliff may not have sounded, in the end, Jamaican enough. Follow My Mind originally came out in 1975 on the heels of the U.S. release of the Harder They Come soundtrack (which featured a quartet of Cliff's finest songs, including the magnificent "Many Rivers to Cross"), and rode Harder's wake onto the lower reaches of the pop charts. But Follow My Mind was a smooth, polished album, with few of the charming rough edges that characterized Cliff's previous work with producer Leslie Kong (who died in 1971, shortly after the Harder soundtrack was completed), and while it definitely had a Jamaican lilt, it sounded as much like Marvin Gaye as it did Marley, and ultimately it was the ragged, gospel-fueled songs ...

| | Culture Two Sevens Clash CD (1978)
Upsetter album
$14.29 One of the masterpieces of the roots era, no album better defines its time and place than Two Sevens Clash, which encompasses both the religious fervor of its day and the rich sounds of contemporary Jamaica. Avowed Rastafarians, Culture had formed in 1976, and cut two singles before beginning work on their debut album with producers the Mighty Two (aka Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson). Their second single, "Two Sevens Clash," would title the album and provide its focal point. The song swept across the island like a wildfire, its power fed by the apocalyptic fever that held the island in its clutches throughout late 1976 and into 1977. (Rastafarians believed the apocalypse would begin when the two sevens clashed, with July 7, 1977, when the four sevens clashed, the most fearsome date of concern.) However, the song itself was fearless, celebrating the impending apocalypse, while simultaneously reminding listeners of a series of prophesies by Marcus Garvey and twinning them to the island's current state. For those of ...
| | Twist Of Marley CD (2001)
Upsetter CD music
$12.99 Recorded between July 2000 and February 2001. Includes liner notes by Lee Ritenour.
Lee Ritenour unveils a new chapter in the legacy of Bob Marley with the release of A Twist of Marley, a collection of that artist's songs that are sung and played by some of contemporary jazz' hottest stars. Ritenour expands on Marley's essence gleaned from the experiences of such international stars as Jonathan Butler, guitarist Marc Antoine, Gerald Albright, Patti Austin, Richard Bona, Rick Braun, Michael Brecker, Will Downing, Lisa Fischer, Dave Grusin, Phil Perry, and Maxi Priest. They cover such great songs as "Exodus," with Lisa Fischer wailing the lead vocals over samples from Bob Marley & the Wailers. This song is so emotional, so awesome, and features that penetrating cry from the inner recesses of her heart and soul. Ritenour has also added the melodic vocals of Maxi Priest on "Waiting in Vain" and the controversial "I Shot the Sheriff," with a fresh contemporary jazz perspective. On the radio hit "Get Up, Stand Up," Lee ...
| | Roger Troutman Zapp CD (1980)
Upsetter music CDs
$7.59 Released in 1980 just as George Clinton's P-funk empire had reached the brink of its existence, Bootsy protégé Roger Troutman proved himself a worthy successor with Zapp's self-titled debut album and its subsequent two follow-ups. In actuality, Zapp originally was a branch of the Parliament/Funkadelic collective, as group leader Roger Troutman was originally signed to Clinton's short-lived CBS subsidiary, Uncle Jam Records. After Troutman completed the album with CBS' money, Clinton's help, and Bootsy's production, Warner Bros. stepped in, offered Roger a considerable sum of money, and slyly bought the album -- leaving a distressed ...
