Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Import In this unique mobster movie, Scott Baio heads up a prepubescent cast as the title character, a child gangster determined to rule over New York City. Instead of throwing fists or bullets, the Prohibition-era kiddie mobsters sling confections at one another. When Bugsy learns that a rival gang has developed a secret weapon capable of firing sweets as quick as a machine gun shoots bullets, he sets out to heist the high-tech tart-launcher.
BUGSY MALONE, director Alan Parker's first feature, cleverly spoofs the rich, cliché-ridden history of films about organized crime while lightly mocking the childlike, selfish traits of grown-ups. The engaging silliness is periodically spirited forward by several song-and-dance numbers composed by bubblegum pop maestro Paul Williams. "Bugsy Malone" was director Alan Parker's first feature-length film.

Cause when they talk about Talula, you know what they say... OOOOhhhhh the memories of this movie keep me deep in my childhood. I absolutely loved this movie and can remember anxiously waiting until the time of year when it would come on public television. I have children now and as we revisit the classic movies of my and my husbands childhood this movie is a standout. I didn't even know that it existed in DVD form until I thought to google it. I am so glad I found it and can't wait to share it with my new family!!! ...No one's gonna eva treat ya finer.. Submitted by selahbaby1 (Compton, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Memories I remember vividly watching a private screening of this film with my classmates in London in 1976. I loved every minute of it then and now. It made such a huge impression on me, seeing children playing those roles. Musical theater was such a passion for me then back then. (My sister and I responded to a casting call for the movie, but didn't make it)I felt compelled to write, because I heard the music of one of the songs (We Could Have Been Anything) in an advertisement yesterday and sang all the lyrics! I called my sister and she was so excited because she remembered the lyrics too! I'm disappointed I can't get a DVD copy in the US. But I'll keep hoping. Bugsy Malone the movie is a big joke! Here's something for a few laughs. These kids in this 1976 musical gangster comedy aren't really singing at all. Their voices
are actually used for the adults instead. Singing every song with adult men and women instead with their dubbed voices. one scene a black kid sings a song you'll
hear Paul Williams voice in this Jodie Foster and Scott Baio flick right here. Submitted by CDJay (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Bugsy Malone film
$11.99 This 1976 soundtrack found Paul Williams turning his writing and producing skills to crafting an original song score for a musical that used child actors to bring an adult story about 1930s gangsters to life. The resulting album works like a charm because Williams uses his Tin Pan Alley sense of melodic craftsmanship to creating a series of short, tight songs that effectively blend modern pop song structures and hooks with pre-rock & roll styles like ragtime jazz and Bing Crosby-style crooner balladry. As one might expect, there are plenty of toe-tapping tunes that evoke the good-timey feel of a speakeasy: "Fat Sam's Grand Slam" mixes a horn-laced up-tempo tune with effective flapper background vocals to create an enticing portrait of the title location, while "Bad Guys" is an amusing tribute to the tough-guy lifestyle that blends a complex multiple-singer vocal arrangment with a jazzy, piano-pounding melody. The up-tempo tracks are balanced out by some surprisingly torchy ballads: "I'm Feeling Fine" is an alluring invitation to romance that boasts a richly-harmonized chorus, and "My Name Is Tallulah" sets tough-girl lyrics to a sultry melody laced with elegant piano fills and stately horns. However, the album's finest moment is the finale, "You Give a Little Love"; this charming tribute to friendship builds from a single piano to a full, ragtime-styled band arrangement that climaxes with a rousing sing-along fade out. Though the album is short, each of the songs holds up to repeated listening and the album flows effortlessly as a result. The end result is one of the best achievements in Paul Williams' career and a charming ...

$15.35 Music and lyrics by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Aherns, with additional lyrics by Dr. Seuss.
SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The fact that Monty Python alumnus Eric Idle takes partial conceptual credit for SEUSSICAL should tip you off to the fact that the ample comic potential of a Dr. Seuss musical is fully exploited here. Many of the characters from Dr. Seuss's classic books are given the sonic spotlight in SEUSSICAL.
Horton the elephant, the Cat In The Hat, and the Whos from the famed Grinch tale are all represented in song. All the strange creatures from the Seuss kingdom are given a full-fledged Broadway treatment here. Fans of big-production Broadway musicals ...

$11.49 The theatrical tale of a '20s Flapper gal, THOROUGHLY MODERN MINNIE already had a place in the hearts of many 21st-century folks due to the version featuring Julie Andrews singing atop an orchestra conducted by no less than Andre Previn. This newer take on the classic musical, however, is full of just as much verve as any previous staging. How else could it have taken jaded New York theater audiences by storm? Moving full circle from the plaint "What Do I Need With Love?" to the revelatory "I'm in Love With Someone," Millie's voyage is one that can be enjoyed equally as well on this disc as it can on the stage.
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Musical Show Album.

| | Avenue Q CD (2003)
Bugsy Malone movie DVD
$11.49 In the late 1990s, the television show SOUTH PARK sparked a trend of using figures associated with children's entertainment, such as puppets and animated characters, in the service of adult comedy. Depending on your viewpoint, this either generates marvelously clever social critique or cheap, tasteless jokes. Adding to the controversy is AVENUE Q, the smash Broadway hit that reads like a thinly veiled SESAME STREET parody, in which a charming puppet world is subverted by smart, bawdy humor about sexuality, pornography, and racism.
In this production, for example, puppet roommates Rod and Nicky seem to have a particularly close relationship (explored in "If You Were Gay") and other characters wonder "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?" and declare "It Sucks to Be Me" in a rousing medley. The original Broadway cast recording features these songs and more, and it is no wonder AVENUE Q won the Tony for Best Musical given its catchy tunes, witty lyrics, and spirited performances. ...

$14.95 Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, the Broadway musical WICKED creates a history for the two witches from L. Frank Baum's OZ books. Through composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz's emotive songs, the show reveals the unlikely friendship between Elphaba (Idina Menzel), who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch, and Glinda (Kristin Chenoweth), the Good Witch.
The dramatic, horn-laden "No One Mourns the Wicked" starts the story in striking fashion, with the death of the ruby-slipper-wearing Wicked Witch. As Glinda appears, Elphaba's backstory begins, leading to jaunty numbers like "Popular" and "Defying Gravity," as well as ballads such as "I'm Not That Girl" and "For Good," with Menzel and Chenoweth showing off their substantial vocal chops. Adding to the boisterous energy is musical theater veteran Joel Grey, who brings a bit of Broadway's past to his role as the Wizard.
