This live disc followed up Rock Festival (1970), another batch of live recordings. However, Ride the Wind (1971) is far from simply a stop-gap effort between studio discs. The trio of Jesse Colin Young (bass/kazoo/rhythm guitar), Banana (guitar/piano), and Joe Bauer (drums) are definitely in their element on these half-dozen sides. In much the same way as their Marin County contemporaries, the Grateful Dead, the Youngbloods' live experience allowed the band to stretch out and take their improvisational interplay to a level that is merely hinted at on their studio sides. The disc begins with a nearly ten-minute version of the title track, which was initially issued on Elephant Mountain (1970). Banana really shines, as his laid-back electric piano runs are ably complemented by some interesting contributions from both Young and Bauer. The centerpiece is the extended instrumental interplay that ebbs and flows as the groove builds incrementally. The happy-go-lucky "Sugar Babe" sticks closely to the up-tempo ragtime version featured on Earth Music (1967). The band returns to Elephant Mountain for an easygoing and pastoral rendering of "Sunlight" that again allows for some well-tempered improvisation. The cover of Fred Neil's "The Dolphin" is another not-to-be-missed epic, as the Youngbloods never issued a studio version and once again a strong jazz influence dictates the performance's overall vibe. "Get Together" was the band's best-known side and still holds up in what is a spirited reading with just enough alteration to make it a worthwhile inclusion. Ride the Wind concludes with a final track from Elephant Mountain, as the optimistic "Beautiful" is given a lengthy and funky workout. When paired with the harder-edged Rock Festival, this live volume gives listeners another aural vantage point from which to rediscover the Youngbloods' unique country-rock leanings. ~ Lindsay Planer

Ride The Wind music CDs
CD $11.49  Audio Samples
From the playful bravado of the opening cut to the understated finale, a kind of dark variation on "Me and Bobby McGee," Home Away visits a range of musical and lyrical settings. Each of these provides insight into Nashville's Will Kimbrough, whose narrative gifts stand out even among his hometown peers. This variety nods somewhat transparently to the diversity of his influences. It's easy, for example, to catch a whiff of Randy Newman in the delicacy, dark irony, and aching love written into "Champion of the World"; Kimbrough makes this clearer still in his muted piano part, but adds his own flavor with theremin lines that hover in the background. It's possible to imagine Billy Joel declaiming on "Letdown," though Kimbrough switches to a George Harrison flavor during the slide guitar licks on the bridge. And it's even easier to mistake "I Love My Baby" for a John Lennon ode to Yoko ...

Felony Blues Band Come'N Get It...While It's Hot! CD  (2007)

Ride The Wind album
CD $16.45
Felony Blues BandMichael Alton Wyrick's BioMy life has been a real challenge although I never thought it was and I never thought I would be able to produce a blues CD. Although my life had a lot of blues in it because of things I did to myself thinking they were all right. I was first introduced to music at the age of five when I heard my father in his four man quartet sing gospel music in the little Baptist Church down by the Rio Grande River south of Harlingen in the Rio Grande Valley. In 1956, at the age of five, my father taught me boogie woogie on the piano. I believe that's when I was first inspired by music. I spent the next five years learning the basics of piano through traditional teaching. At the age of ten, I started playing the guitar inspired by the early and middle sixties music. As my teenage and sixties lifestyle developed, I was introduced to music because of situations that would truly lead me to the blues over the next twenty years. In 1972, I was inspired by Johnny Winters and other blues musicians, to learn to play the slide. I would use metal toilet paper roll holders on my little finger to practice slide technique. After three times of working for the state of Texas and finally cleaning my act up, I arrived back in Harlingen, Texas in July of 2002 with no money and not knowing where the next dollar was coming from. I had worked in construction at one time and owned a construction company but I was older now and the construction industry was not a realistic choice. One of my choices was to teach guitar because I had some experience ...
