The Youngbloods follow their finest album, the previous year's Elephant Mountain, with a total departure, this disappointing live set. Where Elephant Mountain presented some of the Youngbloods' best material and demonstrated their versatility, from the acoustic "Sunlight" to the jazzy "Ride the Wind" and the highly arranged R&B of "Quicksand," Rock Festival merely sounds directionless and self-indulgent. They alternate between guitar and piano-based instrumentation, as on the previous album, but apart from the opening track, largely ignore their strengths: Young's voice and their songwriting. They offer an ill-advised venture into blues territory ("Peepin' and Hidin'"), a mediocre Banana lead vocal (the traditional "Fiddler a Dram"), and a knockoff of Elephant Mountain's "Ride the Wind" ("Josiane"). The instrumental "On Beautiful Lake Spenard," while pleasant enough, is a pretty modest high point. And they close with their most ghastly free-form jazz jam, "Ice Bag." This is probably an authentic representation of a typical northern California rock show, circa 1970, and of greater historical than musical significance. Unfortunately, it provides ample evidence as to why the Youngbloods never achieved greater success. [The band released another live album the following year, the vastly superior Ride the Wind.] ~ James A. Gardner

4 stars Very nice summer music.
This is a very nice album, smooth and not dull, with some strange gadgets in between that keep your ears wide open.

Rock Festival album

This live disc followed up Rock Festival (1970), another batch of live recordings. However, Ride the Wind (1971) is far from simply a stop-gap effort between studio discs. The trio of Jesse Colin Young (bass/kazoo/rhythm guitar), Banana (guitar/piano), and Joe Bauer (drums) are definitely in their element on these half-dozen sides. In much the same way as their Marin County contemporaries, the Grateful Dead, the Youngbloods' live experience allowed the band to stretch out and take their improvisational interplay to a level that is merely hinted at on their studio sides. The ...

Dismissed by the benighted as the Doors' "pop album," SOFT PARADE is one of the band's most adventurous recordings, utilizing strings and horns without resorting to schlocky over-production and moving far beyond their blues roots. Morrison was fully into his shaman phase by 1969, and his obsession with that image is reflected in the proselytizing air of "Tell All the People," and of course "Shaman's Blues." The album's biggest hit "Touch Me," while easily the group's most radio-friendly offering, is a pop classic that ranks among the great '60s AM radio tunes. "Wild Child" ...

School And Rivers
Tom James Scott School And Rivers CD  (2008)

Rock Festival songs
CD $15.35
School and Rivers, released less than two years after Red Deer, Tom James Scott's debut release for Bo'Weavil Recordings, is an interesting and unusual proposition. Scott works with minimal instrumentation, minimalist music, and lengthy durations. He clearly takes his time to compose, and you should take your time to listen -- because it would be easy to dismiss this music as too simple or too static. Also, the predominance of the acoustic guitar could mislead you into thinking in folk music terms. However, School and Rivers definitely does not belong to the folk underground, nor does it proceed from the influences of John Fahey or Loren MazzaCane Connors. No, influences would have to come from the softer side of American minimalism: Steve Reich's more delicate pieces, ...
