Not an auspicious end to the band, but an improvement over the similarly low-key Good and Dusty. The selection of material is much more diverse and appealing, and the use of harp, saxes, and mandolin spices up some of the arrangements. Young's "Dreamboat," the sole original song here, is a good example of the Youngbloods in light R&B mode, and would fit nicely on their best album, Elephant Mountain. Among the cover versions, the swinging, saxophone-enhanced "Running Bear" is fun, as is the jazzy take on "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window," with nice slide guitar and acoustic piano work. Likewise, the piano-based "I Shall Be Released" may not be essential, but it is an able, enjoyable Dylan cover. Fittingly, for a band so enamored with the blues, the Youngbloods bring the curtain down with Robert Johnson's "Kind Hearted Woman," as satisfying a blues track as they cut. ~ James A. Gardner

High On A Ridgetop album
$9.69 When David Geffen convinced Richie Furay, Chris Hillman, and J.D. Souther to join forces to form a country-rock supergroup, it seemed like an inspired suggestion. Crosby, Stills & Nash's folk-rock had scored big with a similar idea, while bands such as the Eagles, who recorded for Geffen's Asylum Records, had made some waves commercially in recent years. But despite high expectations along with the history of their members, the Souther-Hillman-Furay ...
| | Youngbloods Ride The Wind CD (1971)
High On A Ridgetop CD music
$12.95 This live disc followed up Rock Festival (1970), another batch of live recordings. However, Ride the Wind (1971) is far from simply a stop-gap effort between studio discs. The trio of Jesse Colin Young (bass/kazoo/rhythm guitar), Banana (guitar/piano), and Joe Bauer (drums) are definitely in their element on these half-dozen sides. In much the same way as their Marin County contemporaries, ...

High On A Ridgetop CD music
$6.09 This 24-track reissue features the album's original track lineup, including "Baby Don't Scold Me," in mono, followed by the more well-known revised lineup, featuring the single "For What It's Worth" in place of "Baby Don't Scold Me," in stereo.
All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Like the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield were influential in the melding of rock and folk that led to the country-rock sound of the '70s. Neil Young and Stephen Stills were the main singers/songwriters, constantly battling for creative control of the group. From this tempestuous union came melodic rock that ranged from Young's waltz-flavored "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" ...

High On A Ridgetop songs
$10.99 Only three years before the release of this CD, another comprehensive Dixie Cups anthology, Chapel of Love: The Very Best of the Dixie Cups, had appeared on the Collectables label. This has a very slight edge, however, as in addition to including everything from that prior compilation, it adds two more tracks: the fair mid-tempo pop/rocker "Wrong Direction," previously ...
| | Boas Mansion CD (2002)
High On A Ridgetop album
$13.15 The Chicago scene has been quick to label the Boas "the next big thing," and Wilco seemed to agree, tapping the band to open a few weeks worth of dates. However, for all of the hype and acclaim swirling around the band, one thing seems to be missing: hooks. With ten songs in under 40 minutes, Mansion is a brief affair, but for all of the jammy emotiveness sprinkled throughout the record, the songs never present an irresistible, or even terribly memorable, melody.
The Boas draw from influences ranging from Neil Young and the Rolling Stones to Syd Barrett and Red Red Meat (the precursor to Califone), with hints of Moviola and the Fruit Bats. Combining Young's homier acoustic sensibilities with the Stones' off the cuff swagger and Barrett's loose and woozy flair for ...
