For their final pair of albums, the Youngbloods returned to a four-piece band with the addition of Michael Kane on bass as Jesse Colin Young moved to guitar (and saxophone!). Good and Dusty is a low-key, homey effort comprised largely of '50s and blues cover songs. Of the original compositions, "Hippie from Olema No. 5" is a dated rewrite of Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee," the title track is a brief jazz jam, and "Drifting and Drifting" is another stab at the blues. Only the closing "Light Shine" shows a glimmer of Young's songwriting skills; complemented by a modest sax arrangement, it stands head and shoulders above most of the album. The high point is the charming "Circus Face," performed with tasteful mandolin and French horn, which serves as a frustrating reminder of what the Youngbloods could accomplish with strong outside material. ~ James A. Gardner

This has to be one of the best of their later albums. It good rockin collection of songs that include the hit Hippie from Olema. Other highlights include Will the Circle be unbroken and I'm a Hog for you baby.If you like groovin hippie music with a Grateful Dead vibe to it this album is for you!!! Real Old School Jessie Young was an old folkie who cut his teeth on country rock and psychedelic music. In this CD the roots show--fine musicianship, a taste for country-rock and old rock n roll. Good for Byrd fans--only a bit mellower. Enjoy. Submitted by thecaptt (Union NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great album if you like the Youngbloods I am excited that this album is finally available on CD. I lost my vinyl album a while back and have looked for a CD of it ever since. This album has that great mellow California hippie sort of sound that the Youngbloods are best at. I especially like their version of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and the beautiful ballad "That's How Strong My Love Is". Submitted by a reviewer (Salinas, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Blast From My Past Drift back to a time when things moved in a mellow pace. After the acid age and before going thier seperate ways, the Youngbloods churn out a very garage/folk album which reflects the mood and times. When the current rat race seems too hectic for you, sit back and enjoy this cd. If listening to the Youngbloods takes on covers of Stagger Lee, Willie and the Hand Jive, and Let the Good Times Roll don't bring a smile to your face or a twinkle to your eye then you weren't a child of the Flower Power era. Good And Dusty album
$12.95 This live disc followed up Rock Festival (1970), another batch of live recordings. However, Ride the Wind (1971) is far from simply a stop-gap effort between studio discs. The trio of Jesse Colin Young (bass/kazoo/rhythm guitar), Banana (guitar/piano), and Joe Bauer (drums) are definitely in their element on these half-dozen sides. In much the same way as their Marin County contemporaries, the Grateful Dead, ...
