This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed DJ Rob Swift.
The latest and best entry in the Six Degrees label's Under the Influence series is a DJ mix by the well-respected X-Ecutioners alumnus and East Coast Turntable Champion Rob Swift, who has selected a brilliant program of rare vintage funk and soul recordings by such obscure masters of the genre as the Vibrettes, Chuck Carbo, and the Explosions, along with more recent material by Davy DMX and DJ Quik, and a couple of tracks from Afro-Cuban vocalist Bobi Céspedes. As with any good turntablist set, half the fun is the source material itself, all of which works together as a sort of historic kaleidoscope of funk, and half of it is in Swift's artful juxtapositions and virtuosic cutting and scratching. Swift is maybe just a bit too respectful and restrained in his approach to the really old-school stuff, but he cuts loose (pun intended) with a vengeance on Davy DMX's "One for the Treble," Charlie Chase's "We're Gonna Need a Little Scratch," and, especially, the classic "The Man Marley Marl." Towards the end, Swift gets busy with a Latin feel on his remix of Bobi Céspedes' "Lenu," which makes for a nice rhythmic and textural change-up. The best way to improve on this album would have been to make it last more than 45 minutes. ~ Rick Anderson
For this installment of Six Degrees' Under The Influence series, Rob Swift, a renowned member of hip hop's premiere crew of turntable mavericks, the X-ecutioners, has compiled a mix CD that brilliantly highlights his many influences. Under The Influence sports some of Swift's favorite rare tracks in R&B, funk hip hop, Latin & jazz peppered with his accomplished vinyl scratching. Under The Influence album
$13.69 After marking time with a live release, Terry Evans returns after four years with a studio collection that, while it doesn't explore new territory, revels in the gospel-laced rocking R&B that has always been his forte. Old friend Ry Cooder sits this one out again (he does contribute a terrific if slightly off-kilter love song in "My Baby Joined the Army"), but his influence is never far from the proceedings when Mark Shark, Joe Colombo, or especially ex-Cooder cohort David Lindley picks up a slide guitar. Evans plays some rhythm guitar and penned or co-wrote six of these 11 songs, including the stirring "Walkin' Chains," the album's longest and most intense piece. Here the swamp, religious, blues, R&B, and folk strains that appear throughout the disc collide in an explosive, moving ballad that builds to a shattering climax with Colombo's Cooder-ish guitar wailing away. There's plenty of party music, too, with the self-explanatory double entendre "I Got a Pony (She Likes to Ride)," the funky "Let's Get Gone," and the jaunty "Nothing Wrong with Texas (That Leaving Won't Fix)." Evans balances these upbeat tunes with slower, more pensive and brooding material, making for a varied and ...
