On Slo & Lo, guitarist and arranger Jeff Friedman plays through 14 tracks of his self-described "noir-blues." It is an accurate description, though -- clever as it is -- the music doesn't quite delve deep enough into either side of the equation to really make an emotional impact. It is certainly bluesy, though rarely in a raw way that would indicate the form as a natural means of expression. Likewise, Friedman uses enough vibrato and sustained weirdness to hint at noir, though rarely with enough darkness to make that end of it truly effective. Andy Plaisted's drumming is patient and supportive, though Michael Farquaharson's bass and Joe Mulholland's keyboards are a little too electric/synthetic for the occasion. ~ Jesse Jarnow

Slo And Lo MP3 Album
$7.79 Like free jazz, gangsta rap, and techno, death metal is certainly an acquired taste. Some people love it, while others flat-out detest it -- and quite often, those who love it are glad that others don't share their enthusiasm because they like being a part of something that is underground and far removed from the mainstream. Critics of extreme metal will argue that much of it is one-dimensional, and in some cases, they're right -- bands who favor an ultra-fast tempo 100 percent of the time can be exhilarating, but they're also limited. Blasphemy, however, isn't as predictable as other discs that came from the death metal/black metal field in the early 2000s. This CD has all of death metal's trademarks -- fast tempos; lyrics dealing with Satanism and the Occult; and a choked, grunting, evil-sounding vocal style. But while some death metal bands have nothing but fast tempos, Incantation ...

| | Medeski, Martin & Wood Best Of The Blue Note Years 1998-2005 CD (2006)
Slo And Lo songs
$13.55 Groove-jazz trio Medeski, Martin & Wood alighted upon an ingenious formula when they began mixing traditional jazz playing with informal funk workouts and an experimental compositional approach borrowed from hip-hop and electronica. The fusion was a hit with discerning jazz listeners and jam band fans alike, and the group boosted their profile even further when they signed to Blue Note in the late 1990s.
MM&W released some of their best and most adventurous albums on Blue Note between 1998 and 2005, and NOTE BLEU culls some of the finest cuts from those albums. ...
