||Excellent Recording of an Excellent Contemporary Composer|
I received my introduction to the music of Peteris Vasks by way of this recording, and I can easily say this is a CD which must be heard! The Second Symphony (in one movement) is wonderfully melodic and tonal and very strong (may I venture the word "masculine"?) music. There are hints of Shostakovich, Nielsen, Allan Petterson, and somewhat of Sibelius; but this is music that only hints at those composers and is clearly the heartfelt music of Peteris Vasks alone. Listening to this for the first time gave me goose-bumps as when I had first heard the Nielsen 5th, the Shostakovich 5th and the Petterson 7th! Well integrated ideas abound in this music...this is NOT your too common modern "ivory tower" pedantic baloney, but is wonderfully strong; I think that it should reach the mainstream for orchestras around the globe soon. The Violin Concerto was written before the Second Symphony by about one year, but the ideom is much more modern. The single movement Concerto opens with very high and soft harmonics; it moves into soft and gentle themes which at times seem to wander from thought to thought without immediate connection. This appears to be the concept of the piece, however, and reflects the composers thoughts on childhood and the more distant past. It is elegaic, lonely and melancholic music...it is beautiful music. This is much more aggressive at the latter portions, and clearly hints at atonality, but remains completely tonal, nonetheless. The recording is first class, and the dynamics wide and open. In the Symphony the drums are very sharp and clear. Ambience is clean and spacious. The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in the Symphony is without fault; you would not distinguish it from a Top Ten orchestra as a result of their excellent playing. Similarly, the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra (now THERE is a name to remember!) is also first-class, and as good as any chamber orchestra you can think of. Summary: Excellent, Excellent and more Excellent!! This is a very easy recommendation to all.
