Unquestionably one of the most emotionally charged duos in R&B/soul history, Ike & Tina's amazing career had them traveling personal and professional highs and lows unrivaled by most of their contemporaries. And while this has none of their greatest hits, Love Sessions is nonetheless an interesting snapshot at some of their lesser known recordings. Of course, Tina's painfully soulful vocals are the highlight of the entire album, and there are some interesting cover versions that would appeal to diehard fans. However, that's not to say Love Sessions isn't without fault. There are some recordings that appear to be re-recordings on the outside, with Tina's vocals casually pasted on top. It's a solid collection for diehard fans, but those unfamiliar with their greatest hits should search out one of the greatest-hits collections to get a clearer picture of just how amazing they were in their prime. ~ Rob Theakston

Included among the 24 songs are the hits "Surf City," "Honolulu Lulu," "Dead Man's Curve" and "Linda," along with top-notch hot rod tracks like "3-Window Coupe," "Mighty G.T.O.," and "Bucket "T." This BGO reissue of two of Jerry Lee Lewis' Mercury albums catches the Killer in his prime. While it's true that many had forsaken the rock & roll iconoclast as just plain weird, the U.K., Europe, and many of the music's critics hadn't -- and thank God. These two albums, issued in 1971 and 1972, respectively -- though some of the tunes were recorded as early as 1960 -- are a pair of his finest. Check his reading of "C.C. Rider" (done in true Nashville/countrypolitan style), the piano boogie version of Joe South's "Walk a Mile in My Shoes," and a smokin' version of Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'," just to name very few. Suffice to say that there isn't a track here that Jerry Lee Lewis fans can live without, and for those who thought the man was nothing but a caricature after the '50s, pair this two-fer with his recent rollicking Last Man Standing album and there is proof enough in this: Jerry Lee could still stomp your ass in an alley blindfolded.
