Act Like You Know/Lookin For Love
$12.59 When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the ...
| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Act Like You Know/Lookin For Love
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement of her father's passions, only now, they've become his daughter's treasures, as well. It's an affirming story, but that's all it would be if Cash didn't sing her heart out here. The opener, a version of Jimmie Rodgers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," is full of comfortable grace and sentiment, and Cash keeps ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Act Like You Know/Lookin For Love
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates ...

| | Maow Unforgiving Sounds Of... CD (1996)
Act Like You Know/Lookin For Love
$13.25 Most notable for being the band Neko Case was in just before she launched her highly successful solo career, Maow plays a mix of punk, pop, and country. Hardcore Neko Case fans should be warned -- Neko does not handle all the vocals here (though bandmates Tobey Black and C.C. Hammond are very capable) and The Unforgiving Sounds of... is rough, at times amateurish, and not as instantly memorable as Neko's solo releases. The band does manage ...
| | Rachelle Ferrell Individuality (Can I Be Me?) CD (2000)
Act Like You Know/Lookin For Love
$8.85 Principally recorded at The Blue Room Studios, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Rachelle Ferrell began as an R&B-tinged jazz singer, lending funk and soul to highly original takes on jazz standards. On INDIVIDUALITY, the tables are turned, and Ferrell uses her jazz chops in the service of some highly individual-sounding R&B.
Unlike R&B artists who try to expand the genre's boundaries from within, Ferrell arrives armed with a highly developed harmonic sense that allows her not just to deconstruct, but to virtually reinvent modern R&B as we know it. In this endeavor, she's aided by some fellow genre-benders, ...
| | Andre Persiani Real Me CD (1970) (Import) France
Act Like You Know/Lookin For Love
$27.59 Jazz pianist Andre Persiani's 1970 release THE REAL ME is a trio album co-starring bassist Roland Lobligeois and drummer Oliver Jackson, featuring two originals and standards like Duke Ellington's "What Am I Here For?"
There are more than 130 recording sessions featuring this French pianist, although only a few in which he is credited as the leader. Thus the title of Real Me from 1970 may refer to something that has been held back in the many other contexts in which Persiani has been featured. A good deal of his work has been accompanying star soloists visiting France on tour over a period of nearly four decades beginning in the mid-'40s, so an artistic ...

Act Like You Know/Lookin For Love
$16.45 Rick "Bam" Powell, Drummer, Singer, Writer. Spent the 70's going to college, playing in an eight piece horn band called Cannon, then went to Fla. hooked up with now legendary guitarist, Scott Hendersen of Trible Tech. Later, after extensive touring, recorded a live record in NYC at Atlantic Studio called LeBlanc & Carr Live on Big Tree Records. After the break up of LeBlanc & Carr in1978, he stayed in the South playing with various groups until "The Raisins" called in 1980.
