| | Earl Scruggs Three Pickers CD (2003)
Into Dark music CDs
$14.69 Recorded live at the R.J. Reynolds Auditorium, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Includes liner notes by Jim Brown.
THE THREE PICKERS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. "Pick Along" was nominated for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
This concert recorded for public television is a summit meeting of three of the most legendary bluegrass musicians around. Earl Scruggs pioneered bluegrass banjo technique, Doc Watson was the key bluegrass guitarist of the '60s, and Ricky Skaggs spent the '70s and '80s bringing the tradition into contemporary parlance. Here they tackle a mix of traditional songs and original material, lovingly picked by all three, with a minimum of fuss and plenty of country soul. Singing and picking together, they are the ultimate bluegrass dream team; high lonesome harmonies and earthy-but-flawless instrumental runs are the rule of the day. During sections of the performance, each artist got a solo spot accompanied by his own musicians, but it's the trio material that's truly awe-inspiring, displaying the simple majesty that's at the heart of the best bluegrass.
/Doc Watson/Ricky Skaggs.
Personnel: Earl Scruggs (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo); Ricky Skaggs (vocls, acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin); Doc Watson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Alison Krauss (vocals, ...
| | Albert Lee Heartbreak Hill CD (2003)
Into Dark songs
$13.19 Though he's far from a household name, Albert Lee has quietly earned a reputation among musicians and discerning aficionados as a guitar hero of the first order. His twangy, country-influenced licks and dazzling dexterity place him in the Mark Knopfler/Eric Clapton/Richard Thompson camp of guitarists, and, as HEARTBREAK HILL makes abundantly clear, Lee is every inch their equal. He first became known for his work with British country-rockers Head, Hands & Feet, and subsequently worked with everyone from Emmylou Harris to the Everly Brothers. Over the years, Lee's sporadic solo records have delighted those with a penchant for lightning licks that never seem flashy or overdone. HEARTBREAK HILL is something of a tribute to Lee's former employer Harris, as the songs are mostly associated with her own versions. Nevertheless, Lee--an effective singer in addition to his guitar wizardry--makes the tunes his own, from the poignant Rodney Crowell ballad "'Til I Gain Control Again" to the rocking riff-fest "Born to Run" (not the Springsteen song).
Recorded at The Lair, Los Angeles, California; Sound Emporium and Scruggs Sound Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.
Personnel: Albert Lee (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, piano); Maura O'Connell (vocals); Vince Gill (guitar, electric guitar, mandolin); Brad Paisley (guitar, electric guitar); Buddy Emmons (steel ...
| | Frank Sinatra Show With Ella Fitzgerald DVD (1959)
Into Dark album
$10.19 Two of the twentieth century's most loved performers come together in this rare, remastered edition of a live broadcast on December 10, 1959. The "first Lady of Song," Ella Fitzgerald, who by the end of her illustrious career had amassed 13 Grammys and sold over 40 million records, was the special guest of Ol' Blue Eyes; it is one of the few time the two performed together. The show appears here in its entirety, including even the commercials, and Sinatra's current flame, Juliet Prowse, who starred in CAN CAN with him, makes appears as a guest as well. The weekly show, normally filmed at Hollywood's El Capitan Theater, had traveled to Palm Springs for this taping, and the perpetually sunny location was experiencing some unusually foul weather; this initiated some improvised sets and light teasing of Sinatra from the cast.
This show as taped on December 10, 1959, a rare rainy day in Palm Strings, California, hence the improvised sets and the cast ribbing Sinatra about his grand idea of filming in "sunny" Palm Springs. At the time Sinatra was dating guest Juliet Prowse, who was starring ...
