This is a solidly, downright nasty-groovin' compilation of tracks associated with James Brown. the JB's, the Flames, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Sweet Charles are here, laying out A- and B-sides of Brown's tunes, as well as solo issues recorded during the '70s. Anyone who could seriously consider this as filler material has no imagination, and no backbone for slipping and sliding. The music here is 100-percent killer and no filler. Brown wrote some of the cuts here, but even those he had nothing to do with, such as tracks by the Flames, or even the Curtis Mayfield-penned "Future Shock" recorded by Parker, have a firm funk footprint all over them, trademarked by Brown. Issued on CD by Japan's excellent P-Vine label, this one is well worth seeking out. Break a sweat, y'all. ~ Thom Jurek

Food For Funk songs
$5.95 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados were quite receptive to first-rate material ranging from the invigorating "I'm the One" to the hauntingly romantic "A Love of Your Own." By zeroing in on their strengths -- hard-hitting funk and delightfully melodic soul -- AWB saw to it that Soul Searching was every bit as rewarding as its predecessors. ~ Alex Henderson

$12.19 Lucas' impressionable debut album (and the rest of her catalog) finally saw well-deserved CD release at the turn of the 21st century. The set doesn't stray too far from other R&B output in 1977, but it does feature excellent musicianship on the arranging, vocal, and instrumental frontiers. Benefiting from the helping hands of Jerry Peters, "Tender" is a lushly orchestrated, beautifully delivered romancer, while Greg Phillinganes interjects lots of spunk and pep into the bustling number "I Gotta Get Away from Your Love," co-written by the arranger with Lucas. An ideal merger of a disco bassline with R&B guitar licks, keyboard layerings, and backing vocals, it uses subtle elements of Earth, Wind & Fire's sound. A few numbers are more on the generic side, mainly "I'll Close Love's Door" and the over-produced ballad "Me for You." The melodies here just don't cut it, and Lucas' vocals lack a certain inspiration present in most of the material on Simply Carrie. But the freshness of the remaining material -- including the very memorable disco classic "I Gotta Keep Dancin'," graced by the voices of the Walter & Scotty of the Whispers -- showcases an understatedly soulful vocalist with fulfilling repertoire. The only drawback to the CD release is that some of the quality of the original master appears to have been lost over the years. This aspect is most notable on a couple of tracks toward the end of the album and isn't a major detraction otherwise. ~ Justin M. Kantor
