Then: Totally Oldies '80s is an 18-track collection that rounds up some totally '80s songs. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the track selection; it seems as if the compilers just closed their eyes and picked songs that were hits or close to it at random. A selection process like that is bound to turn up some winners; here listeners have great songs like Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl, " Tracey Ullman's "They Don't Know About Us," and Modern English's "I Melt With You." It also produces some strange picks, like Chilliwack's "My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)" and Sneaker's "More Than Just the Two of Us." Most of the songs are vaguely new wave, yet there are enough hard rock tracks to spoil the party for new wavers. Ultimately, the totally random feel of the disc limits its success; the tracks just don't sound good mashed together as they are. Despite this flaw, fans of '80s music who don't really care about history or keeping styles separate or any of that music geek stuff may find this disc to be totally cool background music. ~ Tim Sendra

| | Osmonds Osmondmania! The Osmond Family's Greatest Hits CD (2003) Remastered
Then: Totally Oldies 80S album
$11.49 The Osmonds were the first family of AM pop in the 1970s. This 28-song compilation collects tracks by the Osmond brothers, as well as Donny's solo work, Marie's solo work, and Donny & Marie together. The Osmond brothers had some really big hits, and their ten tracks here are littered with them. Songs like the joyous Jackson 5-inspired "One Bad Apple," the crazed, hard rocking "Crazy Horses," and the infectious "Down by the Lazy River" show a group with an energy and a strong sense of popcraft. Donny tended to go for the soft, teen idol type of sounds. His 12 entries on Osmondmania! feature cuddly tracks like "Puppy Love," "Young Love," and "The Twelfth of Never," and give a good idea why the little girls went wild for Donny. Marie clocks in with three country-influenced songs, including her smash, "Paper Roses." Her popular teaming with Donny found the pair exploring many styles of music, but they were ...
| | Hall & Oates Big Bam Boom CD (1984)
Then: Totally Oldies 80S CD music
$12.79 This was Hall and Oates' most commercially successful album, and in retrospect it's not hard to figure out why; almost every track is either diabolically catchy (just try listening to "Out of Touch" without immediately having the chorus resonate in your head for the next few weeks), danceable ("Method of Modern Love"), arena-rock bombastic ("Bank On Your Love") or all three at the same time ("Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid"). It also helped that H&O had an ear toward hip-hop before most of their contemporaries, as witness the brief mostly instrumental "Dance on Your Knees" that opens the album; it's practically a homage to the Sugar Hill Gang's "White Lines".
Big Bam Boom is the last of the big Hall & Oates albums, the one that closed their period of greatest commercial success and artistic achievement. Parting from Neil Kernon, their engineer/co-producer ...

| | Ringo Starr Tour 2003 CD (2004)
Then: Totally Oldies 80S songs
$8.95 Ringo Starr began touring with his ever-changing All-Starr Band in 1989, and the concept has helped to revitalize not only the ex-Beatle's career but those of the famous players with which he surrounds himself, performing both Starr's hits and those of his bandmates. Initially, he worked with artists whose greatest fame came in the '60s and '70s. However, by 2003, '80s nostalgia was on the menu, and Colin Hay (Men at Work), Paul Carrack (Squeeze, Mike & the Mechanics), John Waite (The Babys, Bad English), and Shelia E. (Prince and solo) were on the stage.
It's ...
