| | Christina Aguilera Stripped CD (2002)
Party Tyme Karaoke: Standards 2 CD music
$11.45 Although STRIPPED is supposed to refer to Christina Aguilera's emotional rather than physical state, you couldn't tell based on her topless pose on the album cover, where the only nod to discretion is some strategically placed hair. Like Britney before her, Christina yearned to get away from her wholesome pop image. In the process, she hooked up with a wide range of collaborators including hip-hop producers Rockwilder and Scott Storch along with a myriad of guest musicians including Eve, Linda Perry, and Dave Navarro. Despite all the glitter and glam, there's no getting away from the fact that Aguilera's singing ability puts her head and shoulders above her poppy peers. Her rich, throaty style works well on slower numbers like a soaring Alicia Keys collaboration "Impossible," piano-driven nugget "Soar," and the Mariah-like "The Voice Within."
Other highlights include the snappy, Lil' Kim hip-hop workout "Can't Hold Us Down," sweeping self-empowering rant "Make Over," and the ribald, jeep-beat crazy joint "Dirrty" featuring Redman. Most revealing (on an emotional level) is "I'm OK," an acoustic guitar-heavy autobiographical remembrance of childhood abuse. Britney Spears may not be quite a woman or ...

Party Tyme Karaoke: Standards 2 songs
$18.59 ENEMY WITHIN is another fine album from Chris Spedding. Most people have heard him only as a guitar player on countless sessions he did during the seventies and eighties. He's a subtly inventive writer, however--crafting songs that seem to adhere to rock basics, but in fact employ deft rhythmic surprises. His high caliber guitar work and exceptional solos are positioned front and center in these songs. While he'd never be a session vocalist, his singing works well in the role he creates for it--and comparisons to J.J. Cale are not far off the mark (but where Cale presents a laidback rural attitude, Spedding's is wired and urban). Besides the great title track, the album also features a tune he penned with Marshall Crenshaw entitled "Hologram."
Known mostly for his session work, guitarist Chris Spedding's Enemy Within release contains enough fragments of mild rockabilly, pop, and traditional rock & roll to keep it afloat. Sounding an awful lot like Mark Knopfler, Spedding fails to unleash any real surprises, as songs like "Signs of Love," "Enemy Within," and "Hi-Heel Shoes" are straight-ahead little rock & rollers with an abundance of catchy licks and recognizable rhythms. Many of the songs employ an echo effect on Spedding's voice, which does become a bit trite, but his playing more than makes up for it, and his guitar does become the main focus throughout the 12 cuts. Once in a while, Carter Cathcart's keyboards join Spedding's indulgent riffs to create a wee bit of differentiation and a lean toward an '80s sound, while drummer Anton Fig is consistent as always behind the kit. Even his renditions of "Shakin' All Over" and Ronnie Hawkins' "Mary Lou," in which Spedding openly struts his talent, are admissible, and the dreary "Go West" is really the only cut that sounds out of place. There's nothing on Enemy Within that matches the amiability of his biggest hit, "Motorbikin," and he isn't as colorful as he was on Roy Harper's HQ album, but nearly every track displays relevant amounts of ...
| | Pieces Of A Dream Love's Silhouette CD (2002)
Party Tyme Karaoke: Standards 2 album
$11.45 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Love's Silhouette contains 14 tracks that swing and sing in the easy-flowing and genre-crossing style that has made Pieces of a Dream a staple in contemporary jazz. The group, who celebrated 25 years in the music business in 2001, continues to push stylistic boundaries and add more hard grooves, a few Latin flavors, and more funk than on their previous chart-topping hit, Acquainted With the Night. This sonic diversity is mostly heard on the urbane, mid-tempo "Turning It Up" and "Mission Possible," while the reverent, bluesy, gospel-tinged "Remembrance (9/11/01)" is a plaintive, poetic elegy to that tragic day. The addition of saxophonist Eddie Baccus Jr. on several tracks was a good move and his sound helps the listener's interests to grow at a much faster pace than it took for these compositions to come to light. The title track was written several years ago but only made the cut after highly prolific composer/keyboardist James Lloyd played it for his family, who urged him to redo it. The beautiful song emerged from its own uncomplicated, loving silhouette, so to speak. Other major ...

$9.29 Produced by none other than Elvis Costello (who here met his future wife, bassist Cait O'Riordan), this album boasts a feel that is close-up enough to be intimidating. Though on slower numbers such as O'Riordan's enchanting take on the traditional "I'm A Man You don't Meet Every Day," this closeness ...
