Although Chicago tragically marked its decade anniversary with the bitter loss of lead guitarist Terry Kath, Hot Streets (1978) was not only the first release without him, it was also the band's initial offering away from James William Guercio -- with whom the group had worked on every one of its previous dozen long-players. Donnie Dacus (guitar/vocals) was brought in to fill Kath's formidable shoes. His maiden voyage would likewise mark the beginning of a downward spiral in terms of the string of hits that was usually associated with Chicago albums. Both the upbeat and pumping opener "Alive Again" and the typical adult contemporary balladry of "No Tell Lover" became their last Top 40 hits for nearly four years. Phil Ramone's production gives the material an added and noticeable bite. The Peter Cetera (bass/vocals) rocker "Little Miss Lover" recalls the band's earliest sides by blending an aggressive backbeat with a funky and soulful rhythm. "Gone, Gone, Gone," the disc's other Cetera contribution, also stands out for Dacus' spot-on slide guitar intonation, which mimics a similar style used most notably by George Harrison. Although it failed to chart when extracted as a single, Robert Lamm's (keyboards/vocals) "Love Was New" is one of the more jazz-influenced tunes on Hot Streets. The laid-back groove effortlessly carries the melody behind a fusion of light rock and contemporary jazz. The 2003 CD reissue includes an additional "bonus selection," a second version of "Love Was New" with an alternate lead vocal from newcomer Dacus. The rapidly changing pop music landscape, whose horizons would embrace disco and new wave, would all but abandon Chicago for the group's next few albums. Although the band attempted to adapt to the trends, it would be four LPs and four years before Chicago would re-emerge in full form on its comeback, Chicago 16 (1982). ~ Lindsay Planer Rhino charges ahead with their thorough renovation of the "classic" Chicago catalog on this 2003 reissue of Hot Streets, which finds the band reeling from the tragic and sudden loss of lead guitarist Terry Kath. Not only would this be their first release without him, it was also marked by the departure of longtime collaborator James William Guercio, who had worked with Chicago even before the beginning and was partially responsible for getting the group a recording contract. Enter Donnie Dacus (guitar/vocals), who was the initial guitarist brought in to fill Kath's formidable shoes. On an equally somber note, "Alive Again," the album's upbeat opener, as well as the adult contemporary ballad "No Tell Lover," would become Chicago's final trip into the Top 40 for nearly four years. While their new producer, Phil Ramone, would give the material an added and not Chicago Hot Streets Songs Hot Streets Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Hot Streets.....finally remixed with full artwork Good remix of an album that Columbia didn't do much with in it's CD form. Good to hear hiss-free mixes of these songs. Donnie Dacus was really overlooked as a guitarist, but does a great job. His vocals also blend well with Peter Cetera. Wish there were more bonus cuts from this one. The alternate vocal verion with Donnie (Love Was New) is awful (Don't know if they were making a point or not?) The cut "Hot Streets" The single "Hot Streets" I think is an excellent song. Mostly instrumental, it has a nice blend of rock, jazz, and pop. It is a demonstration of highly skilled musicianship of these guys. Submitted by atony_45 (College Park, MD, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not their finest, unfortunately . . . . I saw them live shortly after the release of this album, and the fact that they were still hurting from the loss of Terry Kath was apparent. Donnie Dachus played horribly, frankly, and came off like a cheap-imitation Robin Trower. His solo lines on the song "Hot Streets" are not a good example of guitar artistry. Still, some quality musicianship from the rest of the band. Submitted by Gerard (California USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Depeche Mode: Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, Andrew Fletcher. Additional personnel includes: Knox Chandler (cello); Todd C. Reynolds, Joyce Hammann, Natalie Cenovia Cummins, Ralph H. Farris, Lee Grinhauz (strings); Airto Moreira (percussion). Recorded at RAK, Sarm West, London, England; Sound Design, Santa Barbara, California; Electric Lady, Sony Studios, New York, New York. "I Feel Loved" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Dance Recording and for Best Remixed Recording. It's rare to find bands capable of keeping their own best qualities to the fore while trying something new each time out, but Depeche Mode demonstrate that balance in full on the marvelous Exciter. Arguably the first album made by the group as a cohesive unit since Violator (and bearing some resemblance to that record in overall title and song names -- compare "The Sweetest Condition" with "The Sweetest Perfection"), Exciter finds the trio again balancing pop catchiness with experimental depths. As with Ultra, an outside producer helps focus the end results in new, intriguing directions -- in this case, said producer is Mark Bell, known for his work with Björk but also as part of Warp Records' flagship act LFO, which always acknowledged their own debut to Depeche. Bell's ear for minimal, crisp beats and quick, subtle arrangements and changes suit Martin Gore's songs beautifully. If there are few storming arena-shaking numbers this time out, the exquisite delicacy throughout is addicting, with Gore's guitar providing slippery and stinging leads to the smoky, romantic flow of Exciter. "When the Body Speaks" is a particular winner, his gentle work and a backing string ...
| | Tosi Poleri Cantoneruda CD (2007)
Hot Streets
$15.85 Tosi Poleri: “Canto Neruda”(Suncave Productions, 2004)CD“Canto Neruda” is a live project with resulting CD sung by italian-american soprano Tosi Poleri. This project was created contemporarily among the centennial commemorations for the birth of Pablo Neruda (12 luglio 2004), produced by Suncave Productions (2004). The CD is comprised of twelve tracks, (the thirteenth, “h-ombre”, a video clip by Andres Maldonado e Simona Baldelli) which highlights the extraordinary inheritance of Neruda’s odes, set to music by composers Eugenio Chabaneau (Argentina) and Ermanno Dodaro (Italia). Food and sentiment are among the vital ingredients of life and of this musical project; the CD opens with the “Ode to the bed”, and continues to “nourish” us with the “Ode to the onion”, “Ode to the apple”, “Ode to the tomato”, “Ode to fried potatoes”, and with resolve, to the “Ode to life, “Ode to joy, to Enchanted Light, to a Happy Day and “Ode to hope”. A song to all the daily things in life telling many stories and hopefully relieving a part of mans hunger. The rhythm of the poetic verse was the primary inspiration for the choice of the musical form, and so it follows; “Ode to the happy day”, a declaration in a lazy mood that befits a bolero; Ode to the apple has an ironically renaissance flavour, while the “Ode to the onion” is a quasi Argentine/rock rhythm. A taste of Latin music accompanies the “Ode to the tomato” in a Cumbia, and the “Ode to joy” proposes a continuous sort of samba…” even though there’s not too much emphasis placed on the philological side, because they’re only flavours.” says Tosi Poleri. Behind the choices of odes dedicated to the fruits of the earth and to the small and greater things of life, we find a great spirituality, so much so as to have involved the voices of a group of Tibetan monks who just happened to be visiting…in two track of the CD. Canto Neruda ...
