Recorded live at the Theater Koninklijk Carre, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on February 11th, 2002.
According to Bloom, he'd resisted the idea of doing a live album despite requests for a decade prior to the release of this set, recorded on February 11, 2002, in Amsterdam. In its song selection, the record's unsurprising, reaching back as far as his early career and sprinkling numbers from throughout the 1990s with others from his albums in the early '00s. It's different from his studio recordings, though, in that it presents Bloom accompanied by nothing other than his guitar. In that sense it's Luka Bloom unplugged, giving spirited performances of his thoughtful, sometimes verging on too-sensitive songs that are stripped to their core in an intimate venue. The audience is certainly into it, singing along with him at points. As a change of pace, on the closing gentle "Gabriel," Bloom switches from guitar to a more solo orchestral backing with harmonium-like textures. ~ Richie Unterberger

Amsterdam album
$13.59 Luka Bloom's seventh album (not counting three releases in his native Ireland under his real name, Barry Moore, which he changed to avoid comparison with his much more famous brother Christy) is a welcome change. His first new album of original material in three years, BETWEEN THE MOUNTAIN AND THE MOON at last features Bloom's soulful voice and folk-based acoustic guitar supported throughout by full-band arrangements.
Unlike a lot of solo performers who go the full-band route (see Phil Ochs' TAPE FROM CALIFORNIA), Bloom wisely avoids the temptation to go overboard with all his new toys. The arrangements are rich, but surprisingly subtle; Bloom remains at the center, with effective touches like piano, accordion, and cello coloring the songs, not overpowering them. ...
| | Bottle Rockets Blue Sky CD (2003)
Amsterdam CD music
$9.55 In 2002, guitarist Tom Parr dropped out of the Bottle Rockets while they were touring in support of their Doug Sahm tribute disc, Songs of Sahm, and while their rough-hewn roadhouse rock & roll (with a country twang around the edges) had been the focal point of previous albums, their first set as a three-piece, Blue Sky, finds Brian Henneman and his pals turning down the amps and aiming for a quieter, more rootsy sound. With Henneman handling the guitar duties by his lonesome on most cuts (co-producer and Gov't Mule frontman Warren Haynes pitches in on a few songs, as does former Blood Oranges axeman Mark Spencer), Blue Sky aims for a laid-back vibe that's much more country than rock, and with a bit more polish, it's not hard to imagine easygoing tunes like "Men & Women," "Man of Constant Anxiety," or the title cut finding a happy home on country radio with their simple hooks and regular-guy philosophy. But that's not to say Henneman's gone soft, or that Blue Sky is meek or toothless; "Lucky Break"'s tale of a guy who's finally getting a vacation thanks to workman's comp after breaking his leg is certainly ...
| | Very Best Of Jackson Browne CDs (2004) Remastered; Digipak
Amsterdam music CDs
$21.15 Recorded between 1972 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh.
Before this double-disc dose of Jackson Browne's best came along, the influential troubadour's most extensive career summary was the 15-song THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR. This truly definitive anthology contains just about everything on that disc and plenty more. Browne helped define the 1970s singer/songwriter idiom, and that process is carefully documented here, as on the precociously world-weary "These Days" and the soulful, Van Morrison-like "Doctor My Eyes." The collection follows Browne through the years, as he toughens up his sound with more of a rock edge ("Running on Empty," "Boulevard") and adds a sociopolitical edge ...
| | Steve Earle Revolution Starts Now CD (2004)
Amsterdam songs
$14.55 Steve Earle is widely known as a tireless political activist who's not afraid to use his music to further the causes for which he fights. In 2004, America was in dire need of forward-looking activism, and Earle responded with THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW. The album was written and recorded quickly in order for Earle to get his two cents in before the Presidential ...
| | Pete Anderson Daredevil CD (2004)
Amsterdam album
$9.69 Pete Anderson's third solo outing has been a long time coming, and one gets the distinct impression that it's the album he's been itching to make all along. Given that Daredevil is completely instrumental, the guitar geeks already have something to salivate about. But there's much more to it than that. Anderson played the vast majority of instruments, with help in a few places from multi-instrumentalist Skip Edwards and minimal assistance from trumpeter Lee Thornberg and fiddler Donny Reed as well. There's also some string work performed by some mysterious entity know as "the Skipper." If the Latin Playboys were an instrumental country band, they would almost certainly sound something like this. While it's true that Anderson's guitaristry is signature to all he does, he understands dynamic, rhythm, and atmosphere and texture as well. Check the beautifully warm and silvery "My Little Angel," with Thornberg's ...
| | Electric Light Orchestra A New World Record - Expanded Edition CD (1976) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Amsterdam CD music
$7.59 Also available in a 3-pack with FACE THE MUSIC and DISCOVERY.
1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and ...
