| | Dutch Jazz Orchestra Group Portrait Of A Silk Thread: Newly Discovered Works Of Billy Strayhorn CD Dutch Jazz Orchestra Group Discography of CDs
This is a historically significant CD for it features the Dutch Jazz Orchestra performing a dozen Billy Strayhorn numbers, including eight that 28 years after the composer's death were finally receiving their world premiere recording. The 16-piece big band does not attempt to sound like Duke Ellington's Orchestra but there are strong hints of Duke's ensemble in the arrangements. The quality of the music is consistently high, the soloists are respectful but creative to Strayhorn's recently discovered pieces and the overall results are quite memorable. ~ Scott Yanow

Portrait Of A Silk Thread: Newly Discovered Works Of Billy Strayhorn songs
$12.05 With ALL IN ONE, Bebel Gilberto made her home at Verve, which is not just an auspicious label for music but also the home of some of the best Brazilian records of all time--by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto (who is no relation, although she was married to Bebel's father before Bebel's birth), Stan Getz, and, of course, her father, Joao Gilberto. It's obvious Gilberto is well aware of this: the cover is reminiscent of an Astrud Gilberto album and she sings a version of "Bim Bom," which was written by her father and is known popularly for Astrud's version (what's more, it features the piano work of Brazilian royalty Dan Jobim). Still, it's clear Bebel Gilberto knows where to draw the line, and ALL IN ONE is defined more by her songs and her collaborators than the weight of Brazilian musical history that she must carry. Multi-percussionist Carlinhos Brown gets the most instrument credits ...

Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet is neither, by strict definition, a jazz group nor a funk group, but rather an amalgam of the two that blurs the lines so thoroughly that the ST7, as they like to be called, ends up sounding like something ...
