Liner Note Author: Hiromi Uehara. Recording information: Avatar Studio C, New York, NY (09/16/2002-09/18/2002). Editors: Todd Brown; Michael Bishop . Photographer: Mark L. Baer. On the back of the CD case is a photo that is basically a heads-up as to what you can expect from this debut album by 23-year-old jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara. She is standing outside wearing a black dress and a strange yellow-and-white wrap. Her face is turned up to the sky, her eyes and mouth closed, her jaw clenched; her arms are held straight down by her sides with her fingers splayed wide. It's a stance that bespeaks intense energy and a certain defiance. Most of the music contained in the CD seems to have been made in a similar attitude, for better and, occasionally, for worse. Uehara plays with an almost demonic energy and amazing stamina; on a program that consists entirely of original compositions, most of them delivered in a standard piano trio format, she zips from style to style with a sense of urgency that borders at times on the manic. Her propulsive "XYZ" opens the album with churning intensity; "Double Personality" finds her alternating between nearly harmolodic free improvisation and carefully composed modern jazz; "Joy" offers a gentle breath of fresh air before she resumes her headlong musical charge. The album ends with a bonus track, an unaccompanied piano piece called "The Tom and Jerry Show," which alternates between loopy, Carl Stalling-esque avant-gardism and high-speed ragtime. By the end of this album you'll be tired, but it's a good tired. Heaven only knows what her next album will sound like, but the laws of physics would seem to dictate that she'll have to slow down a bit. ~ Rick Anderson Hiromi Another Mind Songs Another Mind Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Amazing! Highest musical standards! I initially went to Barnes and Noble just to browse around and listen to some music. I almost never buy CD's there, it is costly! And I almost never listen to more than 20 seconds of one half of a CD, because it has to REALLY hold my interest. I'm a bit of a jazz fan, mostly Jim Hall and Robben Ford, not really much for piano, like Chick Corea or Oscar Peterson. This disc is something out of the ordinary, to say the least. I was SO blown away, I had to sit and listen to this twice just because the interplay between the musicians was just so captivating and energetic! As far as musicians go, Hiromi is at the top and her band just SMOKES right behind her. This is not straight ahead or even smooth jazz (ugghh!!!), this is the heaviest of all organic elements, be it super deep in the pocket salsa funk to ultra tight spacey future jazz grooves, this music is difficult to define or categorize. To me, this is seriously trend setting music, whether it's the style, the energy or the compositions. Buy this and be prepared to be blown away. I highly recommend it! Fiendishly energetic!!! Hiromi displays staggering chops. The interplay between the musicians borders on the extrasensory. A brilliant, exhausting set that leaves the listener pummeled but smiling deliriously. Submitted by entirely (Pensacola,Fl, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Another Mind
$48.25 Personnel: James Blood Ulmer (guitar); Ornette Coleman (alto saxophone); Jamaaladeen Tacuma (bass); Denardo Coleman (drums). Producers: Ornette Coleman, John Snyder. Reissue producers: James Blood Ulmer, Kazunori Sugiyama. Recorded at RPM Sound, New York, New York on December 5, 1978. Tales of Captain Black first appeared in 1978 on the Artist House label in America. It was a label set up for the purpose of allowing visionary artists to do exactly what they wanted to do. They had issued a couple of records by Ornette Coleman previously, so it only made sense to issue one by his then guitarist, James Blood Ulmer. With Coleman on alto, his son Denardo Coleman on drums, and bassist Jamaladeen Tacuma on bass, Ornette's harmolodic theory of musical composition and improvisation (whereby on a scale of whole tones, every person in the ensemble could solo at one time and stay in this new harmony) was going to get its first test outside ...

Another Mind
$13.49 This newly recorded session features Denver's legendary Tenor Saxophonist Phil Urso coupled with LA's hottest jazz trumpeter Carl Saunders. Backed by an exciting Denver based rhythm section (Paul Romaine, Colin Gieg, and Keith Waters) the group plays tunes associated with the great trumpet player Chet Baker."Phil Urso is a magical name from jazz history, one who made his mark on jazz in the 1950s, settled far outside of New York and has continued playing up to the present day away from the spotlight. His tone on tenor was harder than one normally associates with West Coast jazz (closer to Hank Mobley than to Bob Cooper) and his driving playing helped Baker to evolve from cool jazz to hard bop. A skilled songwriter (his "Halema" is particularly memorable) and arranger, he was a stabilizing force in Chet Baker's career during 1955-57". I can speak for the many bebop and Chet Baker fans when I say "Welcome back Phil Urso!"Scott Yanow,Author of seven jazz books including Trumpet Kings, Bebop, Swing and Afro-Cuban Jazz
