Bottoms Up! music CDs
$14.65 It's for recordings like this that a lot of blues guitar fans started listening to the music in the first place. The definitive Blackwell collection to date, featuring not only his best extant solo sides, but also his work in association with Leroy Carr, Black Bottom McPhail, and Tommy Bradley. The 14 songs here all have something to offer in the playing -- and generally the singing as well -- that will give the listener pause, a run, an arpeggio, a solo passage that makes you say, "Whoa, ...
| | Jimmy Dawkins All For Business CD (1971)
Bottoms Up! songs
$12.29 Recorded on October 27 and November 1, 1971. Includes liner notes by Jim O'Neal.
This time around, Dawkins handed the majority of the vocal duties to Andrew "Big Voice" Odom and concentrated on his guitar (actually, he had some potent help in that department, too: Otis Rush was on second guitar). A generally solid but not overly enthralling set, with two bonus cuts and an alternate take of "Moon Man" added to the CD version. ~ Bill Dahl

| | Zhang Wei-Liang Infatuation For Dizi CD (2000) (Import)
Bottoms Up! album
$15.09 ZHANG Wei-liang is a well-known Chinese flute player, composer, and scholar, a professor at the China Music Conservatory. He has a deep love for all kinds of flutes. He plays many different versions of the dizi, as well as the xiao (an upright bamboo flute), the bawu, the shakuhachi (the well-known Japanese bamboo flute), and the xun (a clay flute). The dizi is the traditional Chinese transverse bamboo flute, on which a piece of rice paper is placed over a whole to give it a small buzzing sound. He plays different versions of the flute, such as the alto dizi, ...
| | Chris De Burgh Best Moves CD (1981) (Import) Germany
Bottoms Up! CD music
$14.45 Irish singer/songwriter Chris de Burgh has always consistantly delivered sweet, smart tunes such as "Traveller" and "Every Drop Of Rain," so it's logical that even though he's never broken the top ten, his work merits a "best of" collection like this one.
Best Moves brings together the strongest singles from Chris de Burgh's first five albums, making for a short but pleasant collection of early material. Not all the tracks are ballads though, and the album is greatly benefited by the eerie "Spanish Train" and the whimsical air of "Patricia the Stripper." A live version of "Broken Wings" appears here as well, with its album version coming from 1977's At the End of a Perfect Day. With his more graceful work, songs like "Every Drop of Rain," "Satin Green Shutters," and "Lonely Sky" showcase his talent for singing elegant ballads that glisten with de Burgh's rural feel. "A Spaceman Came Travelling" is one of his more appealing story-type songs that is benefited by its hymn-like chorus. By far, the greatest attribute of Best Moves is the addition of the nine-minute "Crusader" from the album of the same name. Not found on The Very Best of Chris de Burgh, one of the more accessible compilations from this artist, its wonderful tempo change and narrative balance out all the other ballads on this 11-song set. As the songs on this collection prove, de Burgh's most enjoyable material came from early in his career. Best Moves offers an admirable assortment of both love songs and intricately woven tales. Although much of his material that followed this compilation should not be disregarded, this album does make for a brief but delightful listen. ~ Mike DeGagne

| | Bull Moose Jackson 1945-1947 CD (2003) Import
Bottoms Up! songs
$12.89 The criminally unknown jump bluesman Bull Moose Jackson led an incredible band in the mid-'40s: Sam "the Man" Taylor on tenor sax, Sir Charles Thompson on piano, Panama Francis on drums, and Jackson leading the way on tenor sax and vocals. The tracks on this survey of his work done between August of 1945 and August of 1947 (22 songs taken from six sessions) find Jackson doing slow and sexy blues like "Bull Moose Jackson Blues" and "Cleveland Ohio Blues," smooth ballads like "Embraceable You," his big hit "I Love You, Yes I Do," on which Jackson sounds positively Eckstine-esque, manic swingers like "Hold Him Joe" and the truly wild "Jammin' and Jumpin'," less manic swingers like "Three Bones and Moose on the Loose" and Louis Jordan-styled novelty songs like "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut" and "Miss Lucy." Throughout the disc, the band sounds at the top of its game, able to crank out top-notch swing and jump blues at a moment's notice. Fans of jump blues and humor-filled swing will find this disc to be a real treat. ~ Tim Sendra
