Free jazz legend Sun Ra's live 1976 performance with his Arkestra at Montreux includes "House of Eternal Being" and a version of "Take the A Train."
The excellent Live at Montreux set from 1976 was released on vinyl by both Saturn and Inner City before disappearing from print for many years. In 2003, the set was reissued by both Universe/Akarma and P-Vine. A full 20-member Arkestra (plus dancers) turns in a typically freewheeling set. From "Take the 'A' Train" (featuring a killer solo from Marshall Allen), to the gospel-influenced "El Is a Sound of Joy," to the almost exotica "Lights on a Satellite," to the free and raucous "Gods of the Thunder Realm," and on to "We Travel the Spaceways," the Arkestra covers as much musical territory in this set as anyone would expect from a live Sun Ra show. This is considered to be another classic in a vast discography. [Completists take note: the Universe edition inexplicably fades out the last four minutes of "On Sound Infinity Spheres," which are present on the P-Vine edition.] ~ Sean Westergaard

$32.05 The Vol. 2 designation of this limited-edition double CD may confuse some people, who might reasonably wonder where "Vol. 1" is. Actually, "Vol. 1" was Rollin' Stone: The Golden Anniversary Collection, which came out as a regular retail release in stores and covered Muddy Waters' complete recorded output from 1947 through September of 1952. Picking up right where that release left off, this much more elaborately packaged 51-track double-CD set captures Muddy at the peak of his game, dominating the Chicago blues scene (and, ...

| | Complements Something Like Happiness CD (2006)
Live At Montreux
$12.69 Musical duos have made Canada proud over the years, from folk legends Ian & Sylvia, to the songwriting partnership of Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor. Toronto's The Complements are yet another. Comprised of vocalist Nurit Suzana and vocalist/songwriter/guitarist Kevin Zarnett, the pair's five-song EP, "Something Like Happiness," is a rootsy pop offering ranging from the lead track, "Sweet Sorrow," through to the closer, "Beautiful Mistake."Produced by Gregg Lawless and mixed by Scott Lake, the recording also features the talents of drummer Mark Kelso (Pete Townsend, Shania Twain), bassist John Dymond (k.d. lang, Bruce Cockburn), and keyboardist Steve Klodt (Amanda Marshall, Jeff Healey). While Nurit has co-written with Kevin, the songs on The Complements' debut CD are all Kevin's, some in collaboration with Gregg and musician Dave Taylor. "There's a perspective in the lyric that isn't black and white or good versus bad, it's really just grey areas," Kevin says of his way with words. "The choices that you encounter aren't an easy choice verses a bad choice; it's always something in between. There's a trade off. And that's the bitter-sweet aspect of my songwriting." For Kevin, he was fully intent on pursuing a solo career, when, in 2002, he was introduced to Nurit at Dave Taylor's place. As fate or serendipity would have it, turned out Kevin and Nurit had attended the same high school; she had been friends with his sister, and he had shared classes with her brother. "We found that there was more of a history ...
