Noisy, passionate, and intense hard rockers the Blood Brothers come into their own on BURN PIANO ISLAND BURN, which includes the songs "Ambulance Vs. Ambulance," "Everybreath Is A Bomb," and "Six Nightmares At The Pinball Masquerade."
Higher-pitched and noisier than an army of little dogs, the quintet of youngsters known as the Blood Brothers spew out a relentless wad of spit on Burn Piano Island, Burn, a ferocious album that singes the ears. Their passionate, insane, ranting hardcore is surely not for everyone. It's a truly extreme album at a time when the word "extreme" is used to sell snowboards and SUVs. The Blood Brothers features two singers trading off shrieking into the mic and surprisingly they're shrieking some really fancy lyrics, which is probably the most interesting aspect of the band. On the title song they yelp, "Charred toucans weaving their black sky quilt?/Burn piano island burn!/The seashells scream out celestial code/Melting on the shore inside a flame snow globe." All the lyrics are very much in this surreal poetry vein. An unusual band indeed. They occasionally, though not very often, slow up the torrent on songs like "Six Nightmares at the Pinball Masquerade" and "The Salesman, Denver Max," using, gasp!, acoustic guitars, pianos, and a xylophone. Kids looking to anger their parents to the point of losing it should pick up this CD, turn up the stereo, and lock the door. ~ Adam Bregman

Buoyed by the popularity of the hit contemporary pop ballad "Home," singer Michael Bublé's 2005 album, IT'S TIME, clearly positioned the vocalist as the preeminent neo-crooner of his generation. Easily the singer's most stylistically wide-ranging album so far, 2009's CRAZY LOVE is also one of his brightest, poppiest, and most fun. Bublé kicks things off with the theatrical, epic ballad "Cry Me a River" and proceeds to milk the tune with burnished breath, eking out the drama line by line. It's over the top for sure, but Bublé takes you to the edge of the cliff, prepares to jump, and then gives you a knowing wink that says, not quite yet -- there's more fun to be had. And what fun it is with Bublé swinging through "All of Me," and killin' Van Morrison's classic "Crazy Love" with a light and yearning touch. After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. On This Is War, 30 Seconds to Mars shift their music with the shifting times, adopting a hybrid of the Killers' retro new wave and My Chemical Romance's gothic prog, winding up with a sound that suits their stance. Producers Steve Lillywhite and Flood, both veterans of U2, do give This Is War an appropriately epic scale, helping to bring into focus this mix of synth rock, metal, and prog flavors with Auto-Tuned vocals, gurgling synthesized loops, Kanye cameos, and a children's choir on almost every other song.
