Blessed with a sweet vocal style and a sophisticated stylistic presence, Amerie stakes her claim as a contender for her generation's go at the hip-hop soul crown. Teaming with Mary J. Blige producer/songwriter Rich Harrison, the 22-year-old D.C. native serves up ALL I HAVE, a dozen cuts whose subject matter is steeped in the vagaries of life and love. Prior to this impressive debut, Amerie took a path akin to fellow divette Ashanti and collaborated with a number of hip-hop brethren including Nas and Royce da 5' 9". This apprenticeship served the former military brat well as her silky delivery fuses well with Harrison's harder-edged beats on the percolating "Got To Be There," off-kilter "Hatin' On You" and jittery ambiance of "I Just Died" (which Amerie describes as being about "a passion that is like no other").
Slow jams are equally impressive as Amerie sensually unwinds throughout "Nothing Like Loving You," the airy "Float" (and its abundance of vocal melisma), and the acoustic guitar-dappled title cut. In a field crowded with the likes of the aforementioned Ashanti, Monica, and Brandy, Amerie makes her mark with a debut that makes her stand out amongst a field vying for Mary J. Blige's hip-hop soul throne.
The debut album by 22-year-old Amerie is basically a showcase for writer/producer Rich Harrison, who constructs a series of mid-tempo rhythm tracks and writes lyrics of romantic longing. Harrison's lack of originality is suggested by his inability even to come up with new song titles: Among the tracks here are newly written songs entitled "Need You Tonight," "Got to Be There," and even "I Just Died" (that's right, "in your arms"). Amerie has a pleasant-enough voice that she uses to express a tempered fervor and a degree of eroticism, but she seems to be just another modestly talented performer chosen mostly for her looks; record companies seem to be on an endless search for attractive young women of mixed racial heritage (apparently in hopes of demographic crossover) who can carry a tune, and this willing Georgetown graduate with a Korean mother and African-American father is just the latest in a long line. None of which is to say that she won't succeed (record companies make a lot of money taking such bets), but at least on the basis of her debut album, Amerie has nothing to recommend her beyond a fairly anonymous surface appeal. All I Have
$10.38 Tanya Mei-Tai Coon, is a singer-songwriter, from Colorado. She grew up in Southern California and moved to Colorado 9 years ago. She enjoys performing for concerts, weddings and special events. I began my love for music at a very early age. My mom said that as early as 18 months I would make it clear to her that I wanted her to put the It’s A Small World record on the stereo for me again and again. I would sing it before I could clearly talk. It would sound like “It’s a “mall” “mall” world”. My mom bought an inexpensive keyboard when I was around four. We all fiddled with it enough that she and my dad eventually bought us an organ and then a piano. I started taking piano lessons when I was around 11. I did not really enjoy the slow pace of piano lessons. I really learned more from my friends and my sister, Alicia (also a singer/songwriter/pianist). We would play and sing for hours whenever we’d get the chance. My grandmother was a big fan of mine. She surprised me one day with my first really big gig at The State Fair in Maine (the longest running state fair in the nation) on the closing day of the horse races. I sang the Star Spangle Banner acapella in front of thousands of people and realized what an amazing support I felt when everyone stood and placed their hands over their heart. My songs come from my real life experiences. When my boyfriend, Oliver, drowned in a Kayaking accident in Equador, (December 14, 1998) composing and playing music was my way of healing. I feel that my music is my gift to all people and especially those who are healing something challenging in their lives.I have worked steadily for many many years to overcome my fear of performing. At times I felt I was facing death. Crazy how our minds work.In August 2007 I performed at the Unity Boulder Church in front of about 500 people and I was excited and somehow grounded at the same time. It felt so “right” to be sharing my music with the world.I have been composing these 12 songs over the past 9 years. The first song Waves was inspired by Oliver a few weeks after his passing. I soon had the vision for a full CD. I did not realize it would take me this much time to compose, record and release my first CD and yet somehow the timing is just right. So with Great Love and Compassion I release my music to the world. May you and your loved ones remember how loved you are and how absolutely certain it is that you have a profound purpose and destiny to be filled. The feeling you ...
