| | John Coltrane Very Best Of CD - Import John Coltrane Discography of CDs
This 24-track best of release by jazz legend John Coltrane includes "Too Young To Go Steady," "Soul Eyes," and "My Favorite Things."
This is no less than the fourth Very Best of John Coltrane since 2000. Three of them were issued in the U.S. and this one, issued under the UNI International umbrella in Japan, on Impulse of course, is a double-disc offering that completely covers the Impulse period in its track list. In addition to familiar selections such as "In a Sentimental Mood," "After the Rain," and "Soul Eyes," there are the longish reads of "Greensleeves," "Dear Lord," "A Love Supreme: Part 1: Acknowledgement," a live version of "My Favorite Things," and "Afro Blue," among others from the later period, though nothing from the past Meditations era. This is a nice selection, but there is nothing new under the sun here and even as an introduction to the Impulse period it falls a tad short given its almost complete absence of the really out there material. There are better collections than this one for far, far less money. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Miles Davis Plays For Lovers CD (1966)
Very Best Of music CDs
$8.45 Principally recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Hackensack, New Jersey between 1953 & 1956.
Miles Davis Plays for Lovers collects a number of ballads from the trumpeter's mid-'50s albums to create a lovely late-night disc for friends, night owls, and couples in love. The core band for three-quarters of the album consists of trumpeter Davis, tenor John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. There's an elegant beauty to pieces like "My Funny Valentine" and "You're My Everything," featuring the rhythm section's spare, tasteful backdrop and the carefully chosen notes of Davis' and Coltrane's horns. Even when this lineup shifts occasionally, the low-light mood remains. Bassist Charles Mingus lends a hand on "Smooch" and "Easy Living," while pianist Horace Silver chimes in on "You Don't Know What Love Is." There are fabulous takes of "'Round Midnight," originally recorded for Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants, and the peaceful, ...

| | Charlie Parker Liveology CD (2005)
Very Best Of music CDs
$10.79 The music on this set of broadcasts dates from three time periods. Charlie Parker is heard with his working quintet (December 1948 to February 1949), at a time when he had Miles Davis or Kenny Dorham on trumpet, pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Max Roach. There are five selections from a May 28, 1950, engagement that features trumpeter Fats Navarro, sounding very strong just a short time before his death (if the date is correct). Also in the band are Bud Powell, Curly Russell, and either Roy Haynes or Art Blakey. And finally, from the Rockland Palace in 1952, Parker is teamed with a four-piece rhythm section that includes guitarist Mundell Lowe and pianist Walter Bishop. There are two ways to look at this set. On the one hand, the music is available in more complete form elsewhere and the recording quality is often just so-so. But as an introduction to how Charlie Parker sounded live in clubs as opposed to performing three-minute songs in the studios, there is much remarkable music to be heard. Parker is as advanced as Ornette Coleman ...
| | Clifford Brown More Live At The Bee Hive CDs (2006) (Import)
Very Best Of songs
$13.39 Previously, a double-LP was released of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet live from Chicago's Bee Hive, dating from late 1955. It was historically important because it had Sonny Rollins sitting in with the band for the first time, a short time before he succeeded Harold Land as the quintet's tenor saxophonist; unfortunately it was erratically recorded. However that has nothing to do with this two-CD set, much of which was recorded June 30, 1955. The recording quality is better than expected, trumpeter Clifford Brown is in brilliant form, tenorman Harold Land is at the top of his game, and there are many fine spots for pianist Richie Powell. All of that music was previously unreleased and it includes a nearly 22-minute version of "After You've Gone" (which was not otherwise recorded by the group) and a 15-minute "Blues" among its highlights. In addition, the ...
