Varese Sarabande's 12 Classics is not a collection of Ed Bruce's original hits. As explained in small type on the back cover, this collection "contains new recordings of Ed Bruce's greatest hits, recorded April 1997," so it's not really a good substitution for Varese's regrettably out of print 18-track 1995 collection The Best of Ed Bruce, although most of these 12 songs were on that collection of 1975-1986 material. These aren't bad recordings by any means. They're a little too laid-back, perhaps, and the arrangements are a little limp, but Bruce is in good voice and they're entirely pleasant. Although they're nice to hear, they're not the kind of recordings you'd seek out unless you were a hardcore fan who might like to have these mellow re-recordings as part of your collection. But anybody who thinks this is indeed a replacement for the previous Varese collection should stay away. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Rascal Flatts Melt CD (2002)
12 Classics CD music
$10.39 In the photos accompanying MELT, the members of Rascal Flatts are styled in the manner of typical grunge rockers, complete with goatees, ripped jeans, worn leather jackets, and dour grimaces. Fans need not be worried, though--the group still delivers super-shiny Nashville pop, albeit with a slightly more "adult" lyrical edge than on their self-titled debut. This time around, the songs seem custom-tailored not for teens, but for the George Bush Jr. generation--a young, sophisticated, globally aware, rural middle class more apt to be chatting on-line than downing Lone Stars in the back of a pickup.
In other words, the band makes a concerted effort to match its sublimely catchy melodies with down-to-earth tales of modern grown-up life. Though MELT's highly polished ...
| | Johnny Duncan It Couldn't Have Been Any Better CD (2003)
12 Classics music CDs
$13.15 Johnny Duncan cut an imposing figure: a tall, bearded Texan who seemed like he would bash out barroom ravers instead of crooning sweet country tunes and ballads. Which, of course, is what he did, producing a series of easy-rolling hits -- including several duets with Janie Fricke -- that kept him in the country Top Ten during the second half of the '70s. As his career rolled on, he moved further away from straightforward country and toward poppy, good-time country, slickly produced by Billy Sherrill and sung warmly by Duncan. In retrospect, his hits pointed toward the pop-country crossover of urban cowboy that followed just a few years later, particularly in how it covered '60s pop hits, appropriated breezy mariachi horns, ...

| | Brad Paisley Time Well Wasted CD (2005)
12 Classics album
$9.59 Brad Paisley's music is an interesting amalgam of country sub-genres, a paradigm all its own. He melds straightforward, pop-friendly New Country with clever, somewhat Lyle Lovett-like songwriting and the occasional flutter of Joe Maphis/Jimmy Bryant-style guitar virtuosity. Surprisingly or not, this country combo platter made Paisley ...

12 Classics CD music
$38.19 "A Thousand Miles" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals.
Although comparisons to fellow piano-playing chanteuses Fiona Apple and Tori Amos would be the easiest and laziest to make, 22-year old Vanessa Carlton's confident mastery of the 88's is more reminiscent of Ben Folds if he had Jewel's voice. Carlton's songs on BE NOT NOBODY deal with the emotional heft of love and life minus the collateral damage of physical and psychological abuse.
Armed with classical training ...
