The once monolithic Motown Sound had begun to fragment in the early '70s, and into the breach came Philadelphia International, the label run by genius producers/songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Their stable of artists basically ruled the radio and the nation's dance floors in the middle of the decade, and the O'Jays were probably their classiest act.
This 1973 album is one of the group's absolute best. It's a genuine landmark of the genre, a brilliantly arranged and sung effort offering a fascinating look at a sadly vanished era. Here, socially conscious music such as "For the Love of Money" and "Don't Call Me Brother" co-exists with party anthems like "Put Your Hands Together," and conceptual masterstrokes like the nautical sound effects on the title track.
The "other" O'Jays album masterpiece, Ship Ahoy combined shattering message tracks and stunning love songs in a fashion matched only by Curtis Mayfield's finest material. From the album cover showing a slave ship to the memorable title song and incredible "For the Love of Money," Gamble & Huff addressed every social ill from envy to racism and greed. Eddie Levert's leads were consistently magnificent, as were the harmonies, production, and arrangements. "Put Your Hands Together" and "You Got Your Hooks in Me" would be good album cuts, but on Ship Ahoy they were merely icing on the cake. [The 2003 reissue of Ship Ahoy boasts new liner notes including remembrances by arranger Bobby Martin, remastered sound, and one bonus track: a soul-wrenching live version of "Put Your Hands Together" recorded in London in 1973 and released on the O'Jays' 1974 record The O'Jays Live in London.] ~ Ron Wynn

Ship Ahoy album
$24.79 While MUSICALLY RICH...AND FAMOUS documents the second half of British blues godfather Alexis Korner's career, KORNERSTONED adopts a more comprehensive approach, following the pioneering singer/guitarist from the very beginning of his musical life, all the way through every subsequent phase of his development. ...
| | David Gilmour About Face CD (1984) Remastered
Ship Ahoy CD music
$7.59 Combining layered vocals with a heavily looped guitar sound, "Until We Sleep" begins ABOUT FACE with an almost Byrds-like quality, while the gentleness of the acoustic opening to the ballad "Murder" disguises its homicidal subject matter. Both "Love On the Air," and "All Lovers are Deranged," are distinguished by lyrics written by Pete Townshend, and "Blue Light" is an attempt at funk with a Floydian flavor. Gilmour's strength at ballad writing is evidenced in "Out of the Blue," ...
| | David Gilmour CD (1978) Remastered
Ship Ahoy music CDs
$6.79 Before David Gilmour virtually "became" Pink Floyd he was always the most likely member of the band (with the possible exception of de-facto leader Roger Waters) to release a solo album. 1978's welcome eponymous debut showcased his multi-faceted performing talents.
The album opener "Mihalis" is an ANIMALS period instrumental, which, along with "Raise My Rent," sounds like an outtake from that album. The beautiful "There's No Way Out of Here" begins with a lonely harmonica and, with "No Way" and "I Can't Breathe Anymore," expounds the album's main theme of being trapped in an untenable situation. "Cry From the Streets" is a nod to the blues, while the lovely "So Far Away" harks back to the ballads of OBSCURED BY CLOUDS. Almost a missing mid-period Floyd album, this solo effort is a must-have for all Pink Floyd fans.
By the time of David Gilmour's solo debut, he had not only established himself several times over as an underrated, powerful guitarist in Pink Floyd, but as a remarkably emotional singer, his soothing approach perfectly suited to such songs as "Wish You Were Here." The self-titled album, ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Ship Ahoy songs
$17.75 Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel Good arrived before Nutbush, but that isn't to say they're interchangeable. Both records are hard day-glo funk, overloaded with fuzz guitars, wah wahs, clavinets and horn sections, but of the two, Nutbush City Limits is a bit closer to gritty deep soul thanks to a slow-burning cover of Dobie Gray's country-soul classic "Drift ...

Ship Ahoy CD music
$14.35 AVALANCHE (1968) is not the most prominent record in the canon of folk-rock chameleon Eric Andersen--it did not even make the transfer to CD until 2007. However, this unjustly overlooked record stands as a perfect example of Andersen's unique skill at pouring himself into an extraordinary numbers of the folk world's far-off corners, though never coming off as an insincere dabbler. AVALANCHE opens with ...

Ship Ahoy music CDs
$28.55 Disco queen Sylvester delivers 20 of her best on GREATEST HITS including "Body Strong" and "One Night Only."
With several outdated Sylvester collections on the market, this hard to find Canadian import is by far head and shoulders above the rest. For example, 1989's Original Hits unbelievably left off "Do You Wanna Funk," one of his signature hits, and other collections, such as 12 by 12, leave off "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)." ...
