Kosoma
$11.69 The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What Child is This," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"--the ...
| | Leann Rimes You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs CD (1997)
Kosoma
$5.99 "How Do I Live" was nominated for 1998 Grammys for Song Of The Year and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
The teenage country belter follows up her multi-platinum BLUE with an album of "inspirational songs." While Rimes' definition of that term includes the traditionally gospel-oriented "Clinging To A Saving Hand" and " On The Side Of The Angels," it's also expansive enough to encompass pop standards like "The Rose" and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE might be the least country of her recordings up to this point, relying more on a piano-based pop approach than the steel-guitar-led C&W of her previous work.
Rimes' voice remains the pure, crystalline instrument that has endeared her to millions. Whether she's making the world forget Debby Boone with her version of the title song, or shoving Kate Smith aside with a definitive "God Bless America," her voice is powerful and communicative. To drive the point home, the album closes with a cappella versions of "Amazing Grace" and the National Anthem.
Recorded at Rosewood Studio, Tyler, Texas; McClain Studios, Dallas Texas; ...

| | Orchestre National De Jazz Charmediterraneen CD (2003)
Kosoma
$15.55 For the first time under the direction of a foreigner, Paolo Damiani, the French orchestra explores themes related to the Mediterranean area. With the help of special guests Anouar Brahem and Gianluigi Trovesi, the Italian musical director offers musical landscapes that encompass the various aspects of the region. The album opens with a suite penned by Trovesi, which digs deep into the Italian musical tradition, but also incorporates more recent influences from the Middle East and Africa. With the brass instruments in the forefront, it is definitely the most colorful and animated segment of the disc. François Jeanneau takes the relay with another suite that brings the music back into jazz territory while paying tribute to the long French tradition of jazz violin. The saxophonist successfully blends the saxophones with the string and brass sections, producing ...
| | Joe Ely Millennium Collection - 20th Century Masters CD (2004) Remastered
Kosoma
$7.25 Recorded between 1977 & 1995. Includes liner notes by Gene Sculatti.
Any single-disc collection of Joe Ely's MCA material is bound to drive hardcore fans crazy -- as much for what's left off as what's included. But this set is, arguably pretty close to the grail when it comes to presenting a well-rounded and authoritative portrait of the artist as a young Lubbock song slinger. Most of the volumes in the Millennium collections are inconsistent, as well as being incomplete. While there are a few tracks left off this collection, no one can really quibble with what is here. Songwriters Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore are adequately represented here, in that songs like "She Never Spoke Spanish to Me," "Suckin a Big Bottle of Gin," "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown," and "Dallas," became Ely signatures, though he didn't write them, and his performances paved the way for Gilmore's own mercurial recording career. (Hancock, for the most part, has preferred ...

$47.29 | | Baron Zen At The Mall CD (2006)
Kosoma
$13.49 Recorded by college friends between 1988 and 1992, Baron Zen's At the Mall sounds, well, a lot like something some music-loving kids would record between 1988 and 1992. The Joy Division, Black Flag, and Dead Milkmen influences are all there, as are the early hip-hop, pop, and even disco ones. It's clearly music made by people who liked a lot of different styles (one of Baron Zen's members, Chris Manak, aka DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, though he doesn't show up on every song on the album -- only Sweet Steve, the band's songwriter and main performer, has that honor -- went on to form the Stones Throw record label), and who have some fun toys (a four-track and drum machine, as well as a keyboard and some guitars) and a lot of free time. The covers of Joy Division's "Walked in Line" and Debbie Deb's "When I Hear Music" (which takes an almost industrial spin, and is actually pretty cool) are unpretentious ...
