Natacha Atlas' Something Dangerous is a bit slicker than her last, lightening up the beats and sexy intensity of Ayeshteni for more radio-friendly pop electronics, occasional vocal harmonies reminiscent of Destiny's Child, and lots of guests. Not that you could tell from the first cut, the gorgeous "Adam's Lullaby," on which she's backed by a gently playing Prague Symphony Orchestra string section. After this peaceful opener, the pace picks up with the dancehall-style "Eye of the Duck," featuring fellow Transglobal Underground member Tuup. Then the title cut gets a little funky while Atlas trades off vocal duties with the rapping Princess Julianna. A little later, Atlas takes on "Man's World." While her voice is lovely for it, the cover doesn't quite recapture the magic of her last album's success with Jacques Brel's "Ne Me Quitte Pas" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You." The collaboration with Sinéad O'Connor, "Simple Heart," is a high point, and the album really hits its stride in the songs that follow, with especially good interaction between Atlas and Niara Scarlett on "Who's My Baby," before mellowing out into closing ambient cuts. ~ Joslyn Layne

| Something Dangerous Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) It was OK This album was O.K. Some of the songs were weak. It was cool that she was speaking English but I think she should stick to Arabic.
P.S. I hope she never sings another James Brown song again!!!!! Submitted by Rika01 (Netcong, NJ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Pretty Good This is a very eclectic blend from Natacha, who is currently based in Washington DC. By the way, her native language is French. Her mother was English and her father a Sephardic Jew. Because she grew up in a Moroccan suburb of Brussels, many of her styles are influenced from that culture. However, it is true many of her songs are sung in Arabic. Her background is diverse, not to mention experienced in her help in making the soundtrack of the movie "Stargate". Something Dangerous is an interesting venture and one bound to please some people only acquainted with top 40, but also doomed to her experimental edge on such genres. It also succeeds in pleasing the alternative rockers and techno junkies. Many of her songs are seductive, others politically charged, and don't forget that Sinead O'Conner makes an appearance on the album. A few songs are beautifully ambient and don't seem to fit the feeling of other tracks. Nonetheless, it is a pleasant listen and Natacha Atlas may potentially be the next diva of Belgium (now Washington DC). Submitted by a reviewer (Fort Collins, CO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Shuffled! Natacha Atlas is unlike anything I have ever heard before. This music will take your mind and shuffle it like a deck of cards. It happened to me and I didn’t even try, I just put the record on. Thus began a fearless exploration of international identities, instruments, styles and sounds melded so tightly into one global enchilada that it’s hard to tell where one started and another began. One moment pure Hindi pop, the next reggae and the next middle eastern, R&B, soul, it never yields. It’s ruthless and it’s happening so quickly, so effortlessly that it goes unnoticed, on and on seamlessly to the point that trying to understand it is an overwhelming process and one would be more apt to simply release oneself to the transatlantic, transcontinental train ride that it is. Simply let the doors of your mind be blasted off as you cruise through ages and landscapes of musical pantheons swirling together into one multifarious temple! My god, I am so messed up listening to this album, I don’t know where to begin or if I can begin at all, though I am only now realizing that I have begun and, in fact, it’s over. Beware. This is something dangerous. Submitted by sydhartha (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Stick to your own language I love all her previous albums, but this is very poor. There are two decent tracks sung in her own language, but the rest are dismal. Her attempt to maybe update herself is not good. I hate the rap and the corny English words. Singing in her own language (because I don't understand a word of it) she is mystical and magical but she probably is just singing about losing her bus pass in Cairo. One of my other favourite artists (Mylene Farmer) has so far resisited the temptation to sing in English thanks be for that. Submitted by a reviewer (Stockport UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows.
