Though it was this album's follow-up, COLES CORNER, that was Richard Hawley's mainstream breakthrough, 2003's LOWEDGES alerted the British chamber pop cognoscenti that former session guitarist Richard Hawley was a talent to be reckoned with. At a time when the majority of his compatriots on the U.K. indie scene were taking their cues from the politely twee Belle and Sebastian, LOWEDGES was far richer stuff; a layered, emotionally shaded, and beautifully textured album with detailed arrangements, melodic songwriting, and emotive vocals that recall the best work of chamber pop cult hero Scott Walker, as well as Nick Drake's semi-orchestral BRYTER LAYER. First single "Run For Me" is a minor masterpiece of Burt Bacharach-inspired adult pop, and both "The Nights Are Made For Us" and "You Don't Miss Your Water (Till the River Runs Dry)" reveal a strong 1960s soul influence, although the latter is actually not the similarly titled 1968 Stax hit by William Bell.
Massively anticipated follow up to 2001's acclaimed 'Late Night Final'. Displaying his unique brand of windswept Yorkshire/Nashville crossover, 'Lowedges' is both classic and timeless. As a musician's musician Richard has received reverential acclaim from the likes of Coldplay, Doves, Nick Cave, Badly Drawn Boy and Radiohead. After working with amongst others Pulp, All Saints, Perry Farrell, Nellee Hooper & Baz Luhrman. XL Recordings. 2003.

Magnet (6-7/03, p.96) - "[H]awley does more than embrace a rudimentary David Lynch/Angelo Badalamenti necromancy here, thanks mostly to a voice that rode in from a cattle drive....Hawley's way with the word 'darlin'' is pure AM croon..." Mojo (Publisher) (01/01/04, p.59) - Ranked #15 in Mojo's "The Best of 2003" - "[H]awley emotes his tales of sadness and hope over beatific melodies. Absolutely heartrending." | Lowedges Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) It doesn't get much better In a perfect world this record would be no. 1 in the charts and hailed as an instant classic. Regrettably, we do not live in such a perfect world, but luckily some people, such as the sublime songwriter, singer and guitarist Richard Hawley (almost secretly) creates perfect music for people who appreciate well composed, well arranged and well produced, laid back rock music. And how does Richard Hawley sound like? Hard to explain. But imagine Mark Lanegan (of the Screaming Trees) trying to sing like Roy Orbison, interpreting songs by Scott Walker, backed by a suburb twang guitarist, and you have an idea of what is going on here. Listen to "The Only Road" and will know (one og many highlights)and you will know what I mean. Music simply doesn't get much better these days in my humble opinion. Lowedges album
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. ...
| | Shins Chutes Too Narrow CD (2003)
Lowedges CD music
$12.49 Recorded in James Mercer's Basement, Portland, Oregon and Avasti Studio, Seattle, Washington.
When the Shins bowled over music fans and critics alike in 2001 seemingly out of nowhere (but actually out of Albuquerque and years of playing together) with OH, INVERTED WORLD, their stunningly beautiful debut, the comparisons came pouring in. Scribes likened their insistent, melodic sound and James Mercer's hyper-literate, oblique but mellifluous lyrics to many mostly anachronistic, all deeply revered sources, including everything from the Beach Boys to Love.
The follow-up, CHUTES TOO NARROW, meets and often manages to exceed the tremendous, burgeoning buzz surrounding it. Mercer and co. retain all the elements that made their debut delectable, as the melodies flow hither and thither, a subtle rapture confident in its ability to entrance. Delicately crafted yet explosively poetic lines again abound (such as "secretly I want to bury in the yard the grey remains of a friendship scarred"), and by the time the sing-a-long of "So Says I" kicks in, the ...
| | Belle & Sebastian Push Barman To Open Old Wounds CDs (2005)
Lowedges music CDs
$12.95 Those prolific Scots of Belle & Sebastian released a bounty of non-album tracks across several EPs between 1997 and 2001, and they're all gathered together for the first time on PUSH BARMAN TO OPEN OLD WOUNDS. What's most shocking is that the bulk of these cuts are fully as memorable as anything on the group's proper albums.
As with Belle & Sebastian's better-known material, the songs on PUSH BARMAN are a gorgeously melodic, wistful blend of '60s pop and '80s twee, contrasted brilliantly by some of the most sardonic, bitingly ironic lyrics this side ...
