Gothic Archies includes: Stephen Merritt. It's a somewhat pointless exercise for Stephin Merritt to release his work under so many different monikers (Magnetic Fields, Future Bible Heroes, the 6ths, and the Gothic Archies), but this little idiosyncrasy doesn't make the music any less gorgeous. The New Despair treads the same inorganic, melancholy synth ground as most of Merritt's other work, with equally satisfying results. That said, it is true that the Gothic Archies title does have its own sonic identity: thin, distant guitars take over some of the space Merritt usually fills with synths, and The New Despair's compositions push his pop experiments past the familiar ground of Magnetic Fields and into more varied, adventurous territory. As a result, the seven songs on the record almost seem to have more depth and consistency than some of Merritt's other endeavors. ~ Nitsuh Abebe Gothic Archies New Despair Songs | 1. | It's Useless to Struggle |

| | It Came From The Suburbs - Rare Teen Rock From The Kennedy Era CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
New Despair
$16.65 The folks at Ace Records skillfully archive obscure garage rock, early R&B, and other now-marginalized American pop-music forms. Their MO, generally, is to re-release gems from the catalogs of tiny, forgotten labels. In this case, the label is Downey Records, a small, early-1960s California outfit that specialized in "teen" music. This compilation sheds some light on just how expansive that category became in the youthquake era. Here we have sticky-sweet love ballads, some late-era doo-wop, sexy soul music, and nearly punk-sounding rockabilly--and not a famous name in the bunch. As with all the Ace material, this compilation is a revelation. The title of this CD compilation, along with cover art featuring a cartoon of car-cruising teenagers, gets you geared up for some of the most whitebread early-'60s rock & roll imaginable. However, while these 27 tracks are certainly rare (about half, in fact, are previously unissued), the "suburbs" from which the labels recording them hailed refer to Downey, CA -- which is actually quite close to Los Angeles. And, while much of this material's on the innocuous side, it's not whitebread. Instead, this assortment of late-'50s/early-'60s rock & roll, rockabilly, doo wop, instrumental rock, and novelty tunes is actually a fairly representative sampling of the wide variety of sounds populating the jungle of the early L.A. pop/rock industry. All of it was recorded for the Downey label, though some of it appeared on affiliated labels such as Jack Bee. And absolutely none of it made a substantial commercial impact, though Downey did have a big national hit with the Chantays' "Pipeline," and a much smaller chart entry with the ...
| | Shout Out Louds Our Ill Wills CD (2007)
New Despair
$12.19 Shout Out Louds: Adam Olenius (guitar); Car Von Arbin (autoharp); Bebbon Stenborg (glockenspiel); Ted Malmros (bass guitar); Eric Edmon (drums). On their 2007 sophomore album, OUR ILL WILLS, the Shout Out Louds offer up another round of energetic indie-pop. Issued on the renowned Merge label (in the U.S.), and produced by fellow Swede Bjorn Yttling (of Peter, John & Bjorn), the record finds singer/guitarist Adam Olenius notably influenced by the Cure's sunnier work, particularly on the lush, swooning single "Tonight I Have to Leave It," where the frontman exhibits an uncanny vocal similarity to Robert Smith. Another standout track is "Impossible," which keeps the bright Cure-like veneer, but benefits from Bebban Stenborg's cooing background vocals. An assured and engaging second outing, OUR ILL WILLS cements the Shout Out Loud's status as one of the leading lights of the Scandinavian pop scene. Shout Out Louds' debut, Howl Howl Gaff Gaff, was a bracing slap of a record. Uplifting -- as in off your seat and onto your feet as well as raising your spirits -- and exciting, it was the work of a young, wild band in love with pop music and seemingly life itself. The follow-up from two years later finds a band trying to recover from heartbreak. Gloomy where Howl was sunny, autumnal where Howl was a summer afternoon, sad where the other was bright, Our Ill Wills is the work of tortured souls. The songs tell of tragic accidents, lost love, bleak futures, deeply held secrets, unwanted children, and headaches (in Nordic cities and on parents' couches) in ...

| | Sarah MacDougall Across The Atlantic CD (2009)
New Despair
$15.19 Swedish/Canadian songwriter, Sarah MacDougall is a storyteller, entertainer and pop-troubadour with a haunting voice and songs to match. She delivers each song with passion and depth: her music rips your heart out, twists it around and then, gently coaxes it back home. Combining the raw, rustic quality of lonesome country tales with warm folk melodies and a scandinavian sense of melancholy, Sarah writes about love, heartbreak, crows and living in the city. Now Sarah tours in Canada, UK, and Scandinavia, and captures her audience with her spontaneous stage presence and a Scandinavian-Folk Americana style that has earned her the reputation as one of the most interesting emerging singer/songwriters of the Canadian West.Reviews of 'Across the Atlantic': "MacDougall s latest effort, Across the Atlantic (due out in early 2009 on Copperspine Records) is a moving blend of Scandinavian folk and indie Americana. From sing-a-long ditties to heart-breaking epics, Across the Atlantic gracefully highlights the hook, energy, and honesty of one of the most promising exports to come out of Sweden since ABBA rolled into town drunk on Absolute in their Volvo station ...
