| | Roy Hargrove Emergence CD (2009)
Study In Brown album
$13.99 Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs ...

| | Lee Konitz Jazz Nocturne CD (1992)
Study In Brown songs
$10.89 Although never a poll winner, altoist Lee Konitz has had a more productive and consistently stimulating career than most of his contemporaries, never afraid to improvise fairly freely in his relaxed style. For this Evidence CD, Konitz digs into seven standards with an impressive rhythm section (pianist Kenny Barron, bassist James ...

$10.09 Violinist Mat Maneri, bassist Chris Lightcap, and drummer Jerome Deupree join the adventurous Joe Morris on these seven tracks. Study In Brown music CDs
$13.35 Jessica Williams utilizes a larger group than usual on this set, which was recorded partly in concert and partly in the studios. All eight selections match the great pianist with bassist Jeff Johnson and Jay Thomas (who plays trumpet, flute and tenor). Mel Brown or Dick Berk is on drums, while tenor saxophonist Hadley Caliman makes three welcome appearances. The band performs eight of Williams' originals, ...
| | Chris Speed Emit CDs (2000) (Import) Canada
Study In Brown songs
$14.95 Given the long-standing musical affiliation between the members of Chris Speed's excellent Yeah No Quartet, it's no surprise that their debut recording came out of the corner full throttle. Over the course of three albums, the group has become one of the most exciting bands in improvised music, blending curious grooves, disparate world music traditions, and a highly attuned group dynamic into one thrilling whole. Speed spends most of Emit on his tenor saxophone, which seems to grow more compelling and forceful with each new project. Cuong Vu moves all over his trumpet, soaring above the band one moment, honking and sputtering in the cracks the next. Performing together in no less than four bands, bassist Skuli Sverrison and drummer Jim Black are accelerating into the downtown rhythm section for the new millennium. They seem equally comfortable throwing down puzzling odd-meter grooves as providing delicate ambient accompaniment and both make bold use of granted solo space. Speed's compositions reflect his and his peer's enthusiasm for a wide variety of music: "Kompa" weds a Balkan melody ...
| | Tom McCarthy Electric Distant Surfacing CD (2004)
Study In Brown album
$15.15 THE ELECTRIC DISTANT SURFACING (released October 2000, Cosmic Vending Machine CVM001). An amalgam of primary elements and colors, an initial mission statement, an homage to the psychedelic fusion of Lifetime and early Mahavishnu, a chance of a lifetime to work with the legendary Mo-zone -- Tom McCarthy's first album was conceived as all of these things. Recorded on a shoestring with the loving contributions of Tom's colleagues from the Boston production of Blue Man Group, the centerpiece of the disc is the inspired interaction of McCarthy and drummer Bob Moses, who lends his African-inspired healing vibrations of sound to the project. Spiritual guide, mystic and musical pioneer, Moses continually expands the form and sonic scope of the five compositions from McCarthy, which journey through inner and outer reaches close to the hearts of both musicians -- the incandescent solar fields of mid- to late-Coltrane. The openning track, "Mark of Cain" (a title echoing McCarthy's own sense of wandering in search of the Source of One-ness), ushers forth with a Coltrane-ish modal melody and a corruscating guitar solo through which Moses conjures ecstatic peaks of sound as McCarthy casts a knowing glance in the direction of Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler. Receding from this ...
