At The Ernst-Merck-Halle, Hamburg, Germany music CDs
$9.19 This is one of the less important Stan Kenton LP reissues on Creative World. Six veteran standards (all arranged by Bill Holman) and Gerry Mulligan's "Limelight" (with a chart from its composer) were adapted for the 1955 Stan Kenton Orchestra; all but "Limelight" are currently available on CD. The music swings well (with drummer Mel Lewis pushing the rhythm section) and such talented soloists as altoists Charlie Mariano and Lennie Niehaus, tenor-saxophonist Bill Perkins, trombonist Carl Fontana and trumpeters Sam Noto and Stu Williamson are well-featured. Nothing all that innovative occurs but this accessible set should be of interest to fans of bop (in addition to Kenton's loyal audience) who do not already ...
| | Gordon Goodwin XXL CD (2003)
At The Ernst-Merck-Halle, Hamburg, Germany songs
$14.39 XXL was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. "Hunting Wabbits" was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition. "Comes Love" was nominated for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists.
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band is a modern big band which successfully blends elements of jazz and rock. Goodwin, who serves as keyboardist, composer, arranger and conductor, has created music that proves to be consistently catchy to the listener and challenging to his musicians. The leader obviously loves ...

| | Seldom Scene Act Four CD (1978)
At The Ernst-Merck-Halle, Hamburg, Germany songs
$15.05 Digitally remastered by David Glasser (Airshow, Springfield, Virginia).
Listening to The New Seldom Scene Album in 1976, it seemed clear that the original lineup of the band was running out of ideas. By Act Four in 1979, lead guitarist/singer John Starling had been replaced by Phil Rosenthal, and the Seldom Scene had moved from Rebel to Sugar Hill. The band still possessed all of the qualities that had made it one of the top bluegrass bands of the '70s: great vocals (Rosenthal and John Duffey); high-flying harmony; jazzy guitar, banjo, Dobro, and mandolin; and a solid song selection. The question was whether the Seldom Scene could reinvigorate themselves with a new member. The opener, Rosenthal's ...

| | Pete Brown Meal You Can Shake Hands With In The Dark/Mantlepiece CDs (1969) (Import) United Kingdom
At The Ernst-Merck-Halle, Hamburg, Germany CD music
$21.09 Pete Brown's debut album may not have been as accessible as those of Cream (for whom he often helped write material) or even the early Jack Bruce (for whom he continued to collaborate as a songwriter). There are similarities, however, though more to Bruce's solo work than to Cream. For one thing, there are those lyrics, which are of a far higher standard than heard on most rock songs, ranging from ominous impressionism to take-out-the-piss political satire. Then there's Brown's voice, which rather resembles a gruff Jack Bruce, and is effective though certainly not as smoothly melodic as Bruce's vocals. And then there's the music, which grew out of the same jazz-blues-rock community that gave birth to the Graham Bond Organisation, Cream, and Colosseum. In fact, two other alumni of that scene, Bond (on organ) and Dick Heckstall-Smith (on saxophone), are among the supporting players, as is a young Chris Spedding. There are also unusual psychedelic and Middle Eastern accents here and there in the arrangements, though tasteful and subdued. Because there aren't the pop hooks of the songs Brown had a hand with in Cream, and because Brown's voice is not that of your average rock frontman, it's not something that ever got a wide audience. But it has its rewards for those looking for something a little more avant-garde and intellectual ...

$15.49 It’s funny how one kind gesture can evolve into something with a life all its own. As a Christmas gift, I was given some time in a recording studio. Even though I’ve always longed to be a jazz pianist, when I improvise, the music that comes through me is more along the lines of George Winston. Since I’d never considered recording before, the decision to go ahead and give it a try was one of those things that ...
