'70S Soul Jam Vol. 1 Soundtrack CD

The first volume of The Right Stuff's '70s Soul Jam features performances by the Stylistics, the Dramatics, the Chi-Lites, the Delfonics, and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Although these groups are synonymous with '70s soul, the live material here dates from the early 2000s. (To be fair, the artwork includes photos from the performances, so it's clear the label isn't trying to pull a cheap stunt.) Although most of the groups are down to one or two original members, the vocal performances are strong across the board, and '70s Soul Jam, Vol. 1 might be a nice souvenir for those who caught this tour. ~ Andy Kellman

In a sense, the title is misleading. Although these groups are synonymous with '70s soul, the live material here dates from the early 2000s. (To be fair, the artwork includes photos from the performances, so it's clear the label isn't trying to pull a cheap stunt.) Although the vocal performances are strong across the board, most of the groups are down to one or two original members, and the instrumental backing sounds tinny and pushed off into the background too much. This might be a nice souvenir for those who caught this tour, but there's no way these performances can rival the original studio versions. ~ Andy Kellman
