1990's ELO CLASSICS is a one-disc condensation of AFTERGLOW, the three-disc box set from the same year. With ELO CLASSICS, casual fans and interested neophytes don't have to spring for the full box to enjoy the benefits of the fully remastered sound that made the box set sound better than any ELO compact disc that had preceded it.

Ignoring both the early years when Jeff Lynne co-led the band with his former musical partner Roy Wood and the less commercially successful '80s albums, ELO CLASSICS focuses entirely on the 1973-1979 glory days. Most of the monster hits, from the funky "Evil Woman" and "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" to the plaintive ballads "Telephone Line" and "Can't Get It Out of My Head," are present, but unlike earlier ELO compilations, ELO CLASSICS features a nice smattering of great album tracks as well, like the heavily orchestrated "Boy Blue" and the homesick "Birmingham Blues." A fine set.

Budget price collection from Collectables features the top selling hits 'Don't Bring Me Down,' & 'Evil Woman,' & 'Telephone Line'. 2003.

Recording information: 08/05/2003.

All songs written or co-written by Tom Scholz except "A New World" (Jim Masdea). Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box. During the eight-year hiatus between DON'T LOOK BACK, Boston's sophomore release, and 1986's THIRD STAGE, every member left the band, save guitarist/leader Tom Scholz ...

John Fogerty Centerfield CD  (1985) Remastered

"Put me in coach, I'm ready to play." These are lines familiar to any baseball fan, for John Fogerty's "Centerfield" has become the unofficial song of our national pastime. Those lines also signaled Fogerty's return to the music business after a ten-year absence. The music is mighty familiar, as Fogerty works the same terrain he mined for gold with Creedence Clearwater Revival from 1968-1972. The riff of the opening track, "The Old Man Down the Road," sounds so much like the Creedence hit "Run Through the Jungle" that Fogerty was sued by his former record company for plagiarizing himself. (He won the suit, the court upholding a composer's right to sound like himself.) "Old Man" was a Top Ten single, and this album reached number one itself. "Big Train (From Memphis)" is a rockabilly salute to Elvis, while "I Saw It on TV" takes us on a trip through the '50s and '60s "from Hooter to Doodyville," via the boob tube. "Searchlight" recalls "Keep On Chooglin" and the other extended one-chord jams of the Creedence days. Fogerty also lashes ...

Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studio, New York, New York). Though 1974's ELDORADO is subtitled "A Symphony by the Electric Light Orchestra" and features both a portentous spoken-word prologue and an instrumental finale, this album marks Jeff Lynne's final break from classical-rock fusion in the Emerson, Lake & Palmer sense. Though there're a handful of recognizable lifts from classical and romantic composers, particularly in the swelling opening of "Boy Blue" and the grandly-titled "Illusions in G Major," most of the orchestral arrangements here are in service to Lynne's increasingly accomplished pop songs. One of those is "Can't Get It Out of My Head," a classic '70s pop ballad and FM radio staple that's among Lynne's very best work. Though this was the only hit single on ELDORADO, the rest of the album is nearly as strong. "Laredo Tornado," a Lennonesque mid-tempo strut recalling ELO's earlier hit "Showdown," is a particular standout. Worldwide superstardom was just around the corner. This is the album where ...

Hard To Find 45'S On CD, Vol. 7: 60'S Classics CD  (2001)

Elo Classics songs
CD $13.49  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Here's a real grab bag of Top 40 hits from 1960 to 1966, some of them indeed very hard to find on CD or even hear on the radio. Some of them are not really not that hard to find on CD, though this disc (like every one in this series) takes pains to present original 45 RPM single versions, often in stereo. It leans toward the innocuous pop side of pop/rock, though within that framework there's a lot of variety and a good amount of quality: slightly soul-influenced pop (Gene McDaniels' "A Hundred Pounds of Clay"), poppy, late doo wop (the Velvets' "Tonight [Could Be the Night]," the Chimes' "Once in a While"), British Invasion pop (Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas' "Bad to Me," the Honeycombs' "Have I the Right," the Seekers' "I'll Never Find Another You," Cilla Black's "You're My World"), celebrity teen idols (Patty Duke's "Don't Just Stand There"), weird foreign one-shots (Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki"), jazz soul-pop (Nancy Wilson's "[You Don't Know] How Glad I Am"), and more. The dedicated collector might be interested in the items that are really the hardest to find or even heard on oldies radio, despite having been hit records. Those would include Nathaniel Mayer's relatively gutsy 1962 R&B-pop hit "Village of Love"; Mike Clifford's almost unbearably white-bread 1962 ballad "Close to Cathy"; ...

Existing firmly in the tradition of the Velvet Underground, Austin, TX's Black Lipstick takes the attitude and grace of said '60s rockers and delivers a barely updated version of the sound that -- while obviously derivative -- is still quite well re-created. The Four Kingdoms of Black Lipstick contains five low-key rockers that revel in a sincere understanding of simple song structures and understated hipness. Featuring two former members of the Kiss Offs, who seem to have toned down their notorious behavior a bit, and adding occasional female vocals from Beth Nottingham that evoke a loose and unpredictable feel as much as ...

Teenage Crush, Vol. 4
Teenage Crush, Vol. 4 CD  (2004)

Elo Classics songs
CD $14.55
Vol. 4 of the Teenage Crush series offers another 28 tracks from the mildest side of late-'50s/early-'60s rock & roll, slanted toward (but not entirely devoted to) teen idol-style singers of the era. A bunch of these are big, familiar hits -- Johnny Burnette's "Dreamin'," Bobby Vee's "Take Good Care of My Baby," James Darren's "Goodbye Cruel World," Lou Christie's "Two Faces Have I," Frankie Avalon's "Why," Bobby Darin's "Queen of the Hop," Clyde McPhatter's "Treasure of Love," and the Fleetwoods' "Mr. Blue." Its value to rock & roll oldies collectors is that it mixes these with somewhat lesser-known hits and a bunch of low-charting Billboard Top 100 entries that never get played on the radio anymore. That does mean, however, that much of the CD isn't as memorable as the aforementioned big hits, drifting by innocuously without leaving much of a trace. There are some interesting rarities here, like Huelyn Duvall's Conway Twitty-like ballad "Little Boy Blue" and Tommy Boyce (later half of hit artists Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, who also wrote some of the Monkees' hits) and his 1962 Dion imitation "I'll Remember Carol"; in fact, there are a number of Dion imitations here, reminding listeners just how big Dion was in the early '60s. Other ...
