Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).

Although his most famous records were made on Blue Note, Grant Green's IRON CITY, which was originally released on Cobblestone and later Muse Records, is arguably the best of his mid-period output. Recorded in 1967, this is a trio session with Big John Patton showing some amazing skills on Hammond organ and Ben Dixon on drums. Together they form the consummate organ trio that was the basis of the soul-jazz movement.

Green is masterful throughout, showing tremendous dexterity, expression, and fire. His dancing lines on exciting cuts like the nimble "Samba De Orpheus" and the ultra-funky "High Heeled Sneakers" are excellent examples of his influential single-line soling technique. Patton is exceptional as well; his powerful work on these and Nat Adderley's "Work Song" are prime examples of his own mastery of the organ. Of special note is the trio's moving rendition of the traditional "Motherless Child." In all, this is classic Grant Green, classic soul, and classic fun.

Originally released on Cobblestone Records (9002). Includes liner notes by Mark Gardner, Lance Goler and Joel Dorn.

Personnel: Grant Green (guitar); Big John Patton (organ); Ben Dixon (drums).

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," ...

A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd ...

Bi-Polar
American Heritage Bi-Polar CD  (2004)

Iron City album
CD $13.85  Audio Samples
Confounding all comers since 1997, Chicago's American Heritage have made a career out of challenging established songwriting conventions, and their 2004 release, Bipolar, although comprising an assortment of unrelated tracks culled from several different eras and lineups from over those years, is certainly no different. In fact, one would think it'd be all the more unpredictable for it, right? But despite boasting eternally restless and serpentine arrangements, intense instrumental workouts like "Pole to Hole," "Ass to Ass" and, err, "Phil Collins," strangely tend to blend into one another in a rather unclear fashion. Sure, each one invariably sees the band embarking on a mind-bending game of musical Twister, but with virtually identical end results: oddball shapes that seem as impossible to achieve, as they are easy to forget. Maybe this is due to the above three tracks' mutual origins in one particularly uninspired session, because ensuing instrumentals "Yzzo" ...
Your Mind Is On Vacation
Mose Allison Your Mind Is On Vacation CD  (1976) (Import) United Kingdom

Iron City CD music
CD $13.15
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus, New York, New York). On the surface, this 1976 date for Atlantic might seem like an attempt to cash in on Allison's de facto anthem (the title track) by offering a rerecorded version of it along with new takes on some other old Allison tunes. The fact is that the superb musicianship provided by Al Cohn, David Sanborn, Joe Farrell, and others, does indeed take the tracks to new places. "Your Mind is on Vacation" is given a more propulsive rhythm than the original version. On this and other tunes, the addition of a punchy horn section to Allison's customary piano-trio setting adds a welcome new flavor. Two of the best songs from the Allison classic I'VE BEEN DOING SOME THINKIN' ...

Laid Insignificant
Cavity Laid Insignificant CD  (2008)

Iron City album
CD $11.75  Audio Samples
Perhaps because they hailed from Florida rather than the sludgecore movement's primary stomping grounds of Louisiana (home to Crowbar, Eyehategod, Acid Bath, etc.), Miami's Cavity didn't always benefit from the same amount of media coverage as their consistently inventive body work rightfully deserved. The fact that this prolific oeuvre was spread across a confusing number of full-length and half-length releases, indie record labels (several of which have since gone tits-up), and subject to significant musician turnover, certainly didn't help matters; but the subsequent stream of Cavity reissues undertaken by Hydra Head Industries is a testament to the music's enduring influence and quality. Laid Insignificant, then, is one of those salvage jobs: unearthing, remastering, and repackaging Cavity's original six-song mini-album, ten years after its initial 1998 release via famed artist Pushead's Bacteria Sour label, and adding a couple of missing tracks from the same sessions for what most observers will likely agree is a definitive version (certainly the only one you'll be able to buy for under $100, on eBay). At the time of its recording (April 1997), Cavity were unknowingly wrapping up the first phase of their career -- marked by the bewildering volume of mini-releases mentioned above, and a resulting widespread anonymity outside the sludgecore underground -- and verging on the second, which found them temporarily parting ways with vocalist Rene Barge and signing with Man's Ruin (another label run by a hard rock loving graphic artist, oddly enough) for what would become their most successful and accessible album ever, 1999's Supercollider. In many ways, Laid Insignificant bridged the aesthetic gorge between these two phases: the first represented by rough-hewn, hardcore-influenced material ranging from frantic ...
