Japanese digitally remastered edition contains two bonus tracks: "Dr. Sun" & "Into The Night Blue."
The third album by the Swedish quartet features energetic, harmonious vocals backed by palatable techno beats and a unique pop-Reggae sound. Sisters Jenny and Linn Berggren share lead vocal duty, with their brother Jonas "Joker" Berggren and Ulf "Buddha" Ekberg contributing songwriting, producing, arranging, and varied musical talents. High points include "Always Have, Always Will," which puts a novel spin on the '60s Motown girl group sound; the ballad "Everytime it Rains," with its delicate Spanish guitar trills, and the contagious rhythms of the danceable "Travel to Romantis." The title track, a reworking of Bananarama's 1980's pop hit, perfectly captures the album's vitality and spunk.
Ace of Base's music is never about diversity. Their first two records mined infectious Euro-disco beats to great effect, and the first, at least, illustrated they had a knack for writing big, irresistible pop hooks. Cruel Summer, their third album, attempts to capture the carefree, stylish charm that drove "All That She Wants" and "The Sign" to the top of the charts, and while it has its moments, it fails to rival their previous pop pinnacles. It's a little disappointing that the melodic high point is the title track, a cover of Bananarama's new wave classic. Also, it's a little disappointing that Ace of Base haven't chosen to vary their Euro-disco rhythms, since the relentless thumping makes Cruel Summer sound a little too similar its predecessors -- only without as many hooks. There are almost enough solid tracks to make the album enjoyable as it plays, but there's nothing really memorable about it once it's finished. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Boyz II Men Love CD (2009)
Cruel Summer CD music
$12.64 The title of Boyz II Men's third consecutive covers album is only partially indicative. The love songs covered on this disc span several decades and styles, unlike Throwback (`70s and early-`80s funk and soul) and Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA (self-explanatory), both of which were more focused thematically. What ties these songs together is that they are love songs, and nothing else. That early-`60s R&B (Sam Cooke's "Cupid"), late-`90s country (Lonestar's "Amazed"), and early-`80s rock (Journey's "Open Arms," a choice likely influenced by producer Randy Jackson) are all part of the mix only hints at the randomness of the selections. Despite the range of the sources, Boyz II Men tie it all together. ~ Andy Kellman

$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly ...

Cruel Summer CD music
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with ...

With influences ranging from Trent Reznor, New Order, Pop Will Eat Itself, and Goldfinger, it is no wonder each song comes out sounding familiar, yet fresh and raw.The wash of distortion that comes from the guitar can't quite overpower the driving beats and synth lines while the bass provides a smooth and soothing oasis for listeners to retreat to when they need, topped with vocal hooks so contagious, you don't even notice you've started singing along.
