Purchase Presents, Vol. 1 CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Carpenters Close To You CD (1970) Remastered
Presents, Vol. 1
$6.85 Karen and Richard Carpenter's third album, released in 1970, includes two of their signature songs, Bacharach/David's "(They Long To Be) Close To You" and Paul Williams' "We've Only Just Begun," a tune originally written as a commercial jingle for California's Crocker Banks. The rest of the album continues the siblings' exquisite taste in outside material, returning to Williams for "I Kept On Loving You" and to Bacharach for the Shirelles' "Baby It's You." Also featured here is an appealing version of the classic "I'll Never Fall In Love Again."
Other fine covers include Tim Hardin's "Reason To Believe" and an arrestingly mournful version of Lennon/McCartney's "Help." The album also includes four Richard Carpenter originals, with "Another Song" and the girl-groupish "Maybe It's ...
| | Lost Boys CD (1987) Original Soundtrack
Presents, Vol. 1
$5.99 Joel Schumacher's 1987 film The Lost Boys capitalized on a temporary lull in horror movies in the late '80s and created a heavily music-video-influenced vampire homage with enough campy humor, heavy metal costumes, and hunky stars to put a fresh spin on the genre. An amusing piece of eye candy spiked by a few creepy moments, the movie, in typical '80s style, relies heavily on the soundtrack to bolster its emotional core. The soundtrack, like the film, works great on the surface -- but don't go much deeper. A mix of covers and bombastic '80s pop originals, the songs work best when they concentrate on the horror factor. Echo & the Bunnymen turn in an excellent cover of the Doors' "People Are Strange" that has a bouncier, more melodic touch than the original. ...

| | Best Of The Chantels CD (1990)
Presents, Vol. 1
$9.29 Additional personnel includes: Willie Wilson & The Tunemasters.
Pretty much the ultimate best-of collection from the first great rock & roll girl group, this is also a terrific snapshot of the doo-wop/R&B nexus of the late '50s and early '60s. The Chantels' secret weapon, of course, was lead singer Arlene Smith (all of 16 at the time the first songs here were recorded, including the often-covered "Maybe"). Smith's vocals are astonishing--she has the sheer lung power of an opera singer, without a hint of weakness in any part of her range, and her phrasing conveys every nuance of the pain and confusion of teenage romance.
Nothing else here is quite as epochal as "Maybe," (although the overlooked "Prayee" is a doo-wop classic), but ...
| | Belle & Sebastian Boy With The Arab Strap CD (1998)
Presents, Vol. 1
$9.89 After 1997's IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER made them critics' darlings, Scottish octet Belle And Sebastian ran straight into a series of label woes, and into the inevitable feeding frenzy that surrounds a free agent with their prodigious talents. Their experience with one label exec is detailed in "Seymour Stein" on THE BOY WITH THE ARAB STRAP, which finds the band building on the pastoral pop charms of SINISTER, adding a palpable layer of anger and an increasingly rich sonic palette ...

| | Jaguares Cronicas De Un Laberinto CD (2005)
Presents, Vol. 1
$10.15 Just as American and British rock encompasses an incredibly wide variety of styles, Rock en Espanol spans many different sub-genres. While some artists classified under said heading are essentially traditional Latin bands that employ a few electric guitars and a drum kit, others, such as Jaguares, are committed to a full-on rock approach.
"Bruja Canibal" lays the band's biggest influence out for all to see, employing a sound highly reminiscent of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows," complete with backwards guitars, phase-shifted vocals, and circular drum pattern. "Tu Me Liberas" and "Fenomeno," on the other hand, fast-forward a few decades, mining the chorused guitar sounds and danceable beats of INXS. "Ya Te Quemaste" looks further afield, with its dissonant guitar solos and stop-start rhythms, sounding like a combination of Jane's Addiction and DISCIPLINE-era King Crimson. (In fact, Crimson's Adrian Belew produced this album.) With an eclectic sound that should appeal to a wide ...

| | Black Milk Popular Demand: Instrumentals CD (2007)
Presents, Vol. 1
$11.09 The Detroit MC/producer Black Milk first made noise producing cuts for Slum Village's 2002 mixtape DIRTY DISTRICT. Perhaps SV viewed Black Milk as the perfect J Dilla surrogate, since the young beatmaker's tracks went on to dominate the group's subsequent three albums. On POPULAR DEMAND (officially ...
