A stunning, emotionally charged indictment of war about two captured soldiers. When an oddball pair of Russian soldiers are captured and taken prisoner by a Chechen father hoping to barter them for the release of his captive son, the two disparate hostages begin to develop an unexpected--and frequently humorous--bond of friendship. Inspired by the Leo Tolstoy novella "A Prisoner of the Caucasus." Academy Award Nomination: Best Foreign Language Film. Prisoner Of The Mountains Reviews: "The setting is exotic and beautiful....Directed by Mr. Bodrov with both an oddly tranquil spirit and the awareness of a tightening noose..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...Poignant....It's the beautifully captured images of the region's still, unchanging beauty that will stay with you longest from this haunting film..."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "...Simple, powerful, convincing....A spare, poetic tale of the traps of conflict and fate..."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "...A thoughtful and moving film about war....The movie has an acute sense of place and the passage of time..."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Prisoner Of The Mountains DVD
$7.95 Set in Texas in the 1950s, SECONDHAND LIONS tells the touching story of Walter (Haley Joel Osment), a shy teenager sent to stay with two estranged uncles for the summer. Various rumors surround the two uncles (played by Robert Duvall and Michael Caine), mostly because the duo have only recently resurfaced into family life after 40 years spent carrying out misdeeds and illicit activities. The one fact about the men, of which Walter's mom is only too aware, is that they appear to be extremely wealthy, having stashed over one million dollars in cash at an undisclosed location. After initially balking at Walter's inherent shyness and nervous disposition, the two men soon warm to the child, and proceed to tell him some incredible tales of their adventures.
Director Tim McCanlies lets SECONDHAND LIONS unfold at a leisurely pace, allowing Caine and Duvall to play off each other and slowly bring Osment's character out of his shell. As all the characters become invigorated by the stories and tall tales, a neat bond is formed between them, with some touching interplay and valuable lessons in life for Osment. This is a moving coming-of-age film that the whole family can enjoy.
This comedic and touching family film follows the adventures of a shy ...

$9.69 This relatively little-known film is widely hailed by fans of the macabre. Truly ahead of its time, NIGHTMARE ALLEY is set in the gritty, surrealistic world of traveling carnivals, where eccentric people of all possible varieties interact on a daily basis. In a departure from his usual roles as the Hollywood leading man, handsome Tyrone Power plays a morally questionable circus apprentice determined to climb the carnival ladder no matter what the price. Powers shows immense ...

Prisoner Of The Mountains film
$16.09 A visually hypnotizing cinematic feat, RUSSIAN ARK is Alexsandr Sokurov's spellbinding ode to St. Petersburg's State Hermitage Museum. Shot in one fluid take using High Definition video cameras, the photography floats and careens through the lavish corridors of the museum, examining its architectural details while following a dreamlike plot. A cast of 867 actors supply the action of the film, whether dancing the mazurka in a lively ballroom, performing a military salute, or watching a theater performance. The Marquis (Sergey Dreiden), an aged but limber European dressed in solid black, is the film's charismatic guide, leading the narrator--who is the unidentified voice behind the camera--through each doorway and into each gallery in a sweeping tour of the Hermitage. While the Marquis interacts with some of the guests, debating about Italian art with a couple of Russian scholars, delighting over rich paintings by Rubens and Van Dyck with an angelic blind woman, taking a lively brunette for a spin on the dance floor, others do not see him. Even the narrator suspects that the Marquis is a ghost, long dead and wandering the Hermitage in a quest to better understand history. Time periods, indicated by style of dress, fluctuate between the 1700s and the present. ...
