Four Tet's ROUNDS is that rare electronica album that seems to push all the right buttons at once. The side project of Fridge's Kieran Hebden, Four Tet released two records prior to 2003's ROUNDS, but this acclaimed outing surpasses even those excellent efforts. Incorporating mid-tempo and down-tempo beats, ambient atmospherics, dub elements, and the noticeable presence of acoustic instrumentation, ROUNDS is expertly balanced in style and substance.
Part of Hebden's secret is his subtlety--the sonic experimentation is counterbalanced by lush, languorous melodicism, so that the tension and edge driving his sound never become too over-the-top. Even the frantically paced "Spirit Fingers" has a dreamy feel. "She Moves She" takes a hip-hop beat as its base, but covers it with soft bells and guitar lines that are later made jagged by a rhythmic sample. This remarkably dynamic aesthetic is par for the course--the lovely "Hands" features tumbling drums and found sounds, while the structure of "Unspoken" is both spare and expansive. ROUNDS displays a musician's concern with organic sounds and textures, yet is firmly located within the electronic aesthetic, and the mixture makes for a fascinating experience.
Four Tet is Kieran Hebden, and he has released eight albums between his solo Four Tet work and band efforts as Fridge. Rounds is a beautiful montage of shuffling percussion, piano, guitar and folktronic excursions. 10 tracks. Domino. 2003.

$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer ...

| | Michael Carpenter Kings RD. Works CD (2003)
Rounds
$16.49 After four albums in which he tackled either most or all of the instruments himself, Australian pop prodigy Michael Carpenter has finally jumped into the deep end and formed a band, and miraculously he's actually been able to improve his work in the process. The synergy of having other musicians to bounce ideas off of in the studio has allowed Carpenter to better focus his energies on the important stuff (truth to tell, he's still saving the flashy bits for himself), and Kings Rd. Works, named for his new backing band, fairly crackles with pure pop energy. Carpenter is still saving the songwriting duties for himself, of course, and this is where Kings Rd. Works shines brightest. In his liner notes, Carpenter describes this set as an effort to move past his influences, wanting "the records to sound like me," and while this stuff is as smart and tuneful as anything he's ever done, there are fewer aural name-checks of his obvious favorites (Beatles, Byrds, Beach Boys) and a lot more straight-ahead guitar-centric pop/rock. And Carpenter is as strong a lyricist as he is a tunesmith and producer, which is no small accomplishment, and this album is full of wit and high spirits as well as a maturity and hard-won wisdom on what truly matters in love and life that one doesn't often see in a contemporary pop album. Simply put, Kings Rd. Works is a great record from a criminally underappreciated artist, and if you've been wondering why no one makes the kind of album that can tug at your heart as you sing along these days, well, perhaps you haven't been looking at Michael Carpenter. ~ Mark Deming
After two amazing solo records and a covers compilation all played by his lonesome, Michael Carpenter steps out with a band to call his own. They are called Kings Rd. And they kick ass! It's not only a logical and confident step forward creatively for Carpenter, it's a step that has more bite and some sweet edges and the whole vibe of the project is one a bunch of guys getting together and whipping out their guitar arsenals and mutual talents and fusing it all together for a gathering of collective charm. Armies of jangly guitars, gorgeously layered vocals, inimitable hooks and melodies that stick like chewy candy, it's pop that has the spirit of Tom Petty's best solo work for its inspiration. In Carpenter's own words: "It's my first all-original album in two years, and I feel it is a creative and musical leap forward for me. It presents a different ...

| | William Woods Every Part Of Me CD (2005)
Rounds
$13.25 Familiarity breeds contentment, particularly among William Woods' smooth jazz fans. With Every Part of Me the medical doctor/pianist/composer rejuvenates his listeners with fresh, funky finesse on 11 new songs. Unlike Woods' 2005 Smoothie Award winner Cobalt Blue, his jazz piano voicing skills emerge from a darker space and logically progress into more exotic, advanced chords and substitutions as the program continues. "Alive, Living in Jersey," "Every Part of Me," and "As I Breathe You" are delivered with heartfelt emotion in a smooth jazz state of mind. Intuitive chord structures abound on "Under the Radar," as it gives Woods the chance to flaunt his beautiful technique. The highlight of the session is Woods' haunting melody on "The Fire Within." With the addition of flute, unusual changes, and shifting dynamic shadings, this song exudes soulful musical colors with its captivating sound. The Latin pulse underneath provided by percussionist Glen Caruba adds another noticeable dimension that Woods' fans are sure to enjoy. ~ Paula Edelstein
2004 was a good year for adult contemporary pianist William Woods. His second CD, 'Cobalt Blue’, was released to critical acclaim and picked up a Smoothie Award along the way. In addition, the first track lifted for radio play, 'Blue Me Down’, was included by WJZW DJ Al Santos in his 2004 Top 50 Year End Countdown. Now Woods is back with his latest release 'Every Part Of Me’. It is his first on the Whaling City Sound label and is already being embraced by all who hear it.Given that he is the son of professional violinist Lee Kanter, it’s not surprising that Woods, who was born in Englewood, New Jersey, started out on strings. However at the age of nine he discovered a much greater affinity for piano and developed a passion for both improvisation and composition. A tragic side note to his musical development was written when, as a student of New York City composer and musicologist, Ernest Lubin, he arrived one day for class to find that his instructor had been murdered. He was able to move on from this horror and pursued his studies at Juilliard where he first performed some of his original works.Woods graduated from Princeton ...
