Part of the Jazz Archives label collections, Trumpet Story, Vol. 1: 1926/1951 is a solid overview of some of the most innovative and influential early jazz recordings by New Orleans trumpet players. Beginning in 1926 with King Oliver's funky "Deep Henderson," and quickly followed by Louis Armstrong's landmark 1927 cut of "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," the album moves chronologically through to 1951 and Hot Lips Page's "Jammin' The Boogie." Later collections will focus on players outside of New Orleans, but by focusing on musicians from the birthplace of jazz, this first volume showcases many lesser-known, but no less talented individuals such as Bubber Miley, Tommy Ladnier, and Lee Collins, who's 1951 "Mezzerola Blues" is a revelation. There is also a nice mix of classic and lesser-known recordings, making this a perfect introduction to classic jazz trumpet. ~ Matt Collar

Few electric bluesman have been more versatile than Johnny Heartsman, and that versatility is impossible miss on The Touch. Recorded when Heartsman was 54, this unpredictable CD finds the singer incorporating soul and funk as well as rock and jazz and playing guitar, bass guitar, keyboards and flute. Heartsman (who shouldn't be confused with the late jazz singer Johnny Hartman) gets into a soul-minded groove on "Got To Find My Baby" and "You're So Fine," while "Attitude," "Walkin' Blues" and "Paint My Mailbox Blue" favor a hard-swinging blues/jazz approach a la Jimmy Witherspoon.
