| | Trumpet Story, Vol. 1: 1926/1951 CD - Import
Part of the Jazz Archives label collections, Trumpet Story, Vol. 1: 1926/1951 is a solid overview of some of the most innovative and influential early jazz recordings by New Orleans trumpet players. Beginning in 1926 with King Oliver's funky "Deep Henderson," and quickly followed by Louis Armstrong's landmark 1927 cut of "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," the album moves chronologically through to 1951 and Hot Lips Page's "Jammin' The Boogie." Later collections will focus on players outside of New Orleans, but by focusing on musicians from the birthplace of jazz, this first volume showcases many lesser-known, but no less talented individuals such as Bubber Miley, Tommy Ladnier, and Lee Collins, who's 1951 "Mezzerola Blues" is a revelation. There is also a nice mix of classic and lesser-known recordings, making this a perfect introduction to classic jazz trumpet. ~ Matt Collar

Trumpet Story, Vol. 1: 1926/1951 CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many ...

Trumpet Story, Vol. 1: 1926/1951 music CDs
$14.49 Few electric bluesman have been more versatile than Johnny Heartsman, and that versatility is impossible miss on The Touch. Recorded when Heartsman was 54, this unpredictable CD finds the singer incorporating soul and funk as well as rock and jazz and playing guitar, bass guitar, keyboards and flute. Heartsman (who shouldn't be confused with the late jazz singer Johnny Hartman) gets into a soul-minded groove on "Got To Find My Baby" and "You're So Fine," while "Attitude," "Walkin' Blues" and "Paint My Mailbox Blue" favor a hard-swinging blues/jazz approach a la Jimmy Witherspoon. Those jazz-influenced selections make it sound like Heartsman is backed by a soul-jazz organ combo, but in fact, there is no organist on this CD--rather, Heartsman uses his keyboards to emulate a Jimmy Smith/Jack McDuff ...

"From the opening burst of explosive sound of its title track, Ganesh is as startlingly brash and original as its cover art suggests. Its musical boundaries span the globe with the sounds and styles and rhythmic influences, reaching from Africa to Arabia, to Ireland and India, and back here to the Chicago jazz scene." --Jazz Institute of Chicago-Dennis SiejaThis Chicago-based "globaljazz" quintet was concieved in l992 by pianist/composer Dave Flippo and has survived numerous incarnations and changes in direction. The composition tend to blend elements of one or two world music styles with some elements of jazz, so that you always get some kind of hybrid. Blend this with ...
