| | Bob Marley Uprising CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Abijah music CDs
$11.99 Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Bob Marley generated a staggering number of great records during his brief time in the world's spotlight. Although he cut his first recordings in the early 1960s, it was not until the 1973 release of CATCH A FIRE that Marley and the Wailers became international stars. Eight years later Marley was dead, a victim of cancer. In between, he recorded eight studio albums and several live albums, all of excellent quality.
UPRISING is Marley's final album, and it's also one of his best. As on all his recordings, Marley's writing displays the gift for melody that helped non-Jamaican audiences gain access to his music even when he was singing about the details of island life and the doctrine of Rastafarianism. The most popular tracks here, "Could You Be Loved" and "Redemption Song," are pop masterpieces, ...

| | Dance Hall Crashers Live Record: Witless Banter & 25 Mildly Antagonistic Songs About Love CD (2000)
Abijah album
$7.39 It's virtually impossible to believe that DHC have been in existence for 11 years at the date of this album's release, outliving two or three times over virtually all the Two Tone heroes who were such an initial influence on the band. Sure, there's been lineup changes over the years, but not only has the group thrived, they've come back stronger with every shift. What's even more impressive than sheer longevity, is how true they've stayed to their original vision. Musical fads come and go, and many bands transmute over time (just look at No Doubt), but DHC gloriously remain DHC. Even though The Live Album, as the title suggests, is indeed a live album, the 25-song set works equally well as a greatest-hits collection, with tracks drawn almost evenly from their four albums and the Blue Plate Special EP. Over the years, DHC has evolved into a tight, proficient, and professional unit, but never slick, and thus even the oldest songs -- "D.H.C.," "My Problem," "Othello," and "He Wants Me Back" ...
| | Ras Michael Wah Dem A Go Do Wid It CD (2003)
Abijah CD music
$13.69 The music of Ras Michael & the Sons of Negus has always been built on a different foundation from that of most reggae artists. Where reggae is essentially a slowed-down version of ska, which was itself an inside-out fusion of American R&B and various Jamaican folk music styles, Ras Michael's music takes the traditional nyahbinghi drumming of rural Jamaica as its basis, and adds reggae elements on top. At its best, the result is entrancing in an almost literal way. At its worst, it's long-winded and self-indulgent. There's some of each on this, Weh Dem A Go Do Wit It, Ras Michael's first new album in four years. The album opens with a minimalist, almost unaccompanied medley of traditional Rastafarian gospel songs: "Rastaman Chant," "Dry Bone," and "Jah Ark Is Movering." Those are followed by two straight nyahbinghi numbers: a lovely version of "Haile Selassies Is the Chapel," and a mediocre version of the old English hymn "All Things Bright and Beautiful." The remainder of the program is more straight-ahead reggae, much of which consists of overlong two-chord riffs over which Ras Michael halfheartedly intones lyrics that sound like they may have been made up on the spot -- in any case, it's difficult to escape the conclusion that he put very little work or preparation into these songs. The exception is the very engaging title track, a sharp critique of short-sighted materialism. The dub versions are lackluster. Overall, this is an album that Ras Michael's many fans will welcome, but it may not be the best introduction to his often impressive art. ~ Rick Anderson
"Ras Michael is a roots master and a Nyabinghi specialist. He tells you as it is." - Bob MarleySince the early 60's Ras Michael has remained a unique figure amongst world class & commercially popular reggae artists. His music, based on roots rhythms and African percussion, is referred to as the Nyabinghi sound. It is different from anything you've heard, unless you've heard Ras Michael. With "Dadawah" and "Rastafari", he was in fact the first to bring the Nyabinghi sound to mainstream reggae, which has since used its influence to great effect on singles by Anthony B, Beanie Man, Capleton, Shabba Ranks & Buju Banton. ...

Abijah album
$13.69 About the Album "Suicidally Beautiful":A dark lyrical journey through a man's psyche as he struggles through the end of a relationship and the end of life. Think Radiohead songwriting with the heart of U2 and the soul of The Cure. A band with a thirst for beautiful vocal harmonies and beautiful distorted guitars... Suicidally Beautiful, that is.About The Smythe:The Smythe began as the reincarnation of a successful university band from Illinois.
