With its second release, Lesiem continues to create a hypnotic blend of Gregorian chant, world-beat rhythms, and sultry dance loops. Often compared with Enigma, Lesiem features an otherworldly male chorus chanting with a surprising expressiveness. The music?s moody atmosphere wouldn?t seem out of place in a Gothic cathedral. The brainchild of two German producers, Lesiem?s songs slip between light and dark, cruelty and beauty, and that tension is the secret to the group?s success. ?Poeta? rocks with a lazy dance pulse while the choir seems at odds with itself, alternately scolding and welcoming, creating a complex sense of foreboding. ?Agnus Dei? shows a softer side as the vocals rise toward heaven and the music shimmers with golden, celestial tones. Although all tracks are sung in Latin and are reminiscent of traditional liturgical music, there are no religious categorizations associated with Lesiem?instead, the densely layered music is rich with its own symbolism, mythology, and sonic mystery.
Where the world of fantasy and reality merge into one, Lesiem opens the heavens and paints the starry filled skies with the sensualness of operatic voices, worldbeat grooves, new age melodies and electronica elements, creating a musical genre they call "

Illumination album
$13.25 The 2001 debut of German electronic outfit Lesiem is much more dark and ominous than fans of Enigma and Deep Forest may expect, which only means that teenage goths and their moms may finally have something to agree on when it comes to picking music for long car rides. The Latin-singing male chorus can sound as frightening as Rammstein on an OMEN soundtrack one moment, and as transcendent as Handel's MESSIAH in the next, while Ferenc Snetberger wails on electric guitar in WALL-era Pink Floyd mode, and Alex "89" Wende provides the dance loops and orchestral thunder with his keyboard work.
One of the highlights of MYSTIC SPIRIT VOICES ...

| | Lesiem Auracle CD (2004)
Illumination album
$13.29 Each Lesiem album invites the listener to ask again the age-old question: what exactly is the point of writing pop music lyrics in Latin and having them sung in unison by a choir as if they were Gregorian chant? The liner notes to the latest Lesiem album offer one possible explanation: this music "reveals a magical message for these times. It speaks to the hearts of humanity in an age where legends inspire and muses seek to enlighten minds while passing a torch of spiritual light to fellow travelers across the globe." A less charitable interpretation might be that writing Latin lyrics and having a choir sing them is ...

| | Roger Espinoza Cafe Fuego CD (2002) (Import) United Kingdom
Illumination CD music
$14.39 Roger Espinoza's Café Fuego is a good example of what could be called "flamenco light" -- in other words, modern flamenco-minded acoustic guitar playing that tends to be light (although not lightweight), relaxed, and pop-influenced. This 2002 release is hardly the work of a flamenco purist; Café Fuego is closer to Ottmar Liebert than Paco de Lucia or Tomatito. But not everyone who plays acoustic Spanish guitar is obligated to be another Tomatito, and even though Café Fuego isn't a masterpiece, it is enjoyable and fairly creative. Spanish flamenco isn't Espinoza's only influence; although the Los Angeles-based, Nicaraguan-born guitarist is very flamenco-minded, he isn't afraid to incorporate Afro-Cuban and South American elements. Spain has had a major impact on his playing, but Espinoza ...
