Vibraphonist Victor Feldman's 1959 recording Latinsville found the British expatriate exploring various Latin rhythms in a decidedly West Coast style. Featuring an all-star group that included such cool school luminaries as trumpeter Conte Candoli and Frank Rosolino, Feldman also brought in Latin music pros including percussionists Willie Bobo and Mongo Santamaria, bassist Tony Reyes, and others. Selecting such popular songs of the day as "South of the Border," "Poinciana" and "Lady of Spain" -- most of which never originally specified a Latin-style treatment -- Feldman made explicit each songs implied Latin idiom. Although artists such as vibist Cal Tjader and Dizzy Gillespie had been producing Afro-Cuban and Brazilian inflected jazz for a few years, the cross-pollination didn't really catch on until the '60s. Consequently, Latinsville, while in no way as influential as say, Getz/Gilberto, is nonetheless a forgotten gem. ~ Matt Collar

Latinsville album
$8.69 Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) to reach their final form. ...
| | Shelly Manne Steps To The Desert: Modern Jazz Versions Of Favorite Jewish And Israeli Songs CD (2004)
Latinsville CD music
$12.35 When Shelly Manne recorded Steps to the Desert in 1962, John Coltrane was among the most controversial musicians in jazz. Some people praised Coltrane's modal innovations; others detested his post-bop work and even went so far as to describe it as "anti-jazz" (which is simply ridiculous). Arguably, Steps to the Desert is Manne's way of acknowledging the influential saxophonist; the CD has a modal orientation, and it indicates that the Los Angeles-based drummer was paying close attention to Coltrane in the early '60s. Not that Steps to the Desert is actually meant to be a tribute to the influential saxman -- if Coltrane (or for that matter, Miles Davis or Yusef Lateef) showed Manne the possibilities of modal jazz, he certainly embraces it on his own terms. Steps to the Desert finds Manne and five other ...

| | Ian Hunter Dirty Laundry CD (1995) (Import) Germany; Japan
Latinsville CD music
$15.95 Dirty Laundry is actually a glorious accident, as Ian Hunter originally intended to record only a few songs at Abbey Road, but was swept up in the energy from a knock-out band, resulting in one of his best works. As Hunter's output lessens, every nugget dispensed from this sultan of snarl has merit, but all 12 of these tracks are quality songs, most written on-the-spot in the studio. Hunter seems relaxed and happy to jam with an all-star band of talented unknowns. One of Hunter's many enduring and endearing traits is his unwavering knack for writing slight, meaningless rock tunes. His gift for garnishing the obvious is laced with gnarly slide and female backup for a great opener, "Dancing on the Moon." The hidden prize is the prime "Psycho Girl" by pseudo-legend Honest John Plain, who also provides the golden "Good Girls (a single)." "Another Fine Mess" (evoking the spectre of late soulmate Mick Ronson) and "Scars" are the types of hangover meditation Hunter always pulls off. "Invisible Strings" maintains Dirty Laundry's pick-up pub feel, but the playing holds together and no cut goes on too long. "Junkee Love" showcases smokin' guitar and the Bo Diddley beat. Dirty Laundry doesn't lapse into depression until the close, because no one wants to go home. Hunter proves to be one of the most consistently strong singer/songwriters yet. His status as king of the cut-out bins adds credibility to his ...
