Similar to jazz artists, Latin pop singers can move back and forth between audiences, exploring new terrain with a crossover album and then returning home to the faithful with a more traditional date. Almas del Silencio, Ricky Martin's first Spanish record in five years, actually offers something for all of his widely varying audiences, from Jalisco to Hartford. The opener "Jaleo" is a kitchen-sink performance, boasting Spanish guitar but also a few biting metal chords, a deep bottom end for dance fans, and a yearning, romantic vocal. The single "Tal Vez" is pure ballad territory, with an army of strings and Martin struggling to pull off a histrionic performance. He breaks out with some subtle vocal feats on the digital-age Emilio Estefan, Jr. production "Jamas," and also sounds great during the other dance track, "Besos de Fuego." There's something here for everyone. ~ John Bush Similar to jazz artists, Latin pop singers can move back and forth between audiences, exploring new terrain with a crossover album and then returning home to the faithful with a more traditional date. Unfortunately, Almas del Silencio bears the stamp of a superstar record; the songs tend toward the bland, and their production entailed the use of more than a dozen recording studios (including 11 in Miami alone). With nothing here as infectious as his American smash, Ricky Martin, this probably won't satisfy those of his fans with an objective ear. ~ John Bush Ricky Martin's first Spanish-language album since 1998 marks a return not only to his roots but also to a formula that had started to elude him--that of the well-crafted pop song. With ALMAS DEL SILENCIO he's both assured enough to know his strengths and adventurous enough to take chances, accomplishing both with the stripped down ballad "Nadie Mas Que Tu." The hot Latin dance numbers that first brought him fame aren't ignored, either--"Jaleo" is an obvious contender for international hit status, while the emotive "Tal Vez" and "Si Tu Te Vas" find him in full chest-baring mode. It's obvious with ALMAS DEL SILENCIO that Martin's move back to his roots has both energized him and given his performing skills surprising and hitherto-unsuspected depth.

No disappointment. After a brief break away, this album is very good and a pleasure to listen too - I wouldn't say that there was anything specific that stood out on it but a joy nevertheless. Submitted by ashley.briscoe (Manchester - UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Ricky returns with style and quality I consider music must come with rhythm and melody, and latin music is always more fulfilling than others.
Two years is a long time to be away but with confidence, Ricky Martin returns and demonstrates the power of his latin music. With joint effort of Alejandro Sanz, Emilio Estefan, Jon Secada, Ricardo Arjona, Tommy Torres and Franco de Vita, "Almas del silencio" delivers energized latin beat and also beautiful ballads across the album. Ricky sees triumph as soon as both singles,
"Jaleo" and "Tal Vez" claimed the top of many latin charts as soon as they are released. "Las Almas del silencio" and "Asignatura Pendiente" are another two outstanding piece of music that tells us about Ricky Martin life and so very expressive, to the artist emotion.
With promotional tours across countries and continents, Ricky Martin targets the world rather than the United States. It would not be a surprise that Almas del silencio will surpass Sound Loaded and redeem the recognition and respect that he very much deserved. Running true to form..... ...of Ricky Martin - not a bad effort, although nothing particular to report - more ballads. Submitted by ashley.briscoe (Manchester - UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Ricky's best ever ! What a jewel this CD is. It is by far his most ethnic sounding album. The ballads show such growth and maturity in his voice and in content. The uptempo songs are great fun. This should be another Grammy winner for Mr. Martin. Submitted by a reviewer (Fond du Lac Wi.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Almas Del Silencio
$11.99 Producers include: Brian Ritchie, Gordon Gano, Tom Grimley, Guy Stevens, Bob Sargeant, Freddie Mercury. Personnel: Peter Balestrieri (vocals, baritone saxophone); Steve MacKay (baritone saxophone). Audio Remixers: Chris Hughes ; Jack Hues; Tim Oliver. Unknown Contributor Roles: Jacquie Perryman; Christine Edwards; Bill Green ; Chris Thomas ; Kathy Nelson. Director George Armitage's Grosse Pointe Blank (which probably should be called John Cusack's Grosse Pointe Blank, since he not only starred in it, but also co-wrote and co-produced it) is set at a ten-year high-school reunion in Grosse Pointe, MI, in the present day, that being the spring of 1996. Thus, ex-Clash member Joe Strummer, credited with the original score, could call upon music dating back to the mid-'80s for songs the characters, now in their late twenties, would know. You might expect, then, that those 1986 graduates would be grooving to, say, Heart's "These Dreams" or "Greatest Love of All" by Whitney Houston. But, of course, Cusack and Strummer are much too hip for such popular fare. Instead, they put together a collection of edgy, British-oriented new wave and alternative rock, mostly from the early and mid-'80s, tracks by the likes of the Clash, the English Beat, the Specials, and the Jam, plus Americans Violent Femmes and Faith No More. Then there are ringers like Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now," which was a hit in 1972 when the main characters would have been about three years old, and Guns N' Roses' version of "Live ...
