| | Randy Armstrong No Regrets CD Randy Armstrong Discography of CDs
Both as a solo artist and a member of the Doah World Music Ensemble, world fusion pioneer Randy Armstrong has been blending musical genres with imagination and style since the mid-'70s. 2003's NO REGRETS finds Armstrong continuing his efforts to forge a new musical language that combines jazz, classical, African, Indian, and Native American traditions. A wide variety of guitars (including a synth-guitar), percussion (including tabla, djembe and balafon), flutes, and studio manipulations make for a musical journey that spreads its geographical map wide. The results are organic and indigenous, yet decidedly contemporary. Armstrong composed nine of the album's 11 tracks (one of the two covers is Miles Davis's "Blue in Green," which receives a delicate treatment that feels Asian and country-tinged at once), making NO REGRETS an impressive tour-de-force from this talented musician.
Listening to No Regrets, Randy Armstrongs tenth album, is like listening to a whole season of concerts in one sitting. As one of the pioneers of the world fusion music genre in the early 70s with Do'ah World Music Ensemble, Randy brings all of his experience and performance genius to a collection of songs that range from the evocative sounds of a Lakota courting flute to a most sophisticated jazz guitar arrangement of Miles Davis Blue in Green. In between, Randy explores the full range of emotions and captures them in ground-breaking arrangements that further his reputation as one of the most innovative musicians of the era.In No Regrets, Randy provides a showcase album not only of his lyrical flair, but also of his virtuosity with a widevariety of instruments and musical styles. Randy performs on two rare Michael Jacobson-Hardy handmade cutaway guitars, as well a 1948 vintage Gibson L7 jazz guitar and a Godin Jazz Multiac synth-guitar. In addition, he deftly coaxes echoes from cultures around the world playing the North Indian sitar and tabla, West African djembe, balafon, djun-djun, Lakota flute, and other instruments which he plays with equal virtuosity. And of course in No Regrets, Randy explores a genre-defying variety of styles, including jazz, world fusion, western classical counterpoint, flamenco, North Indian, and Native American.

| | Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas CD (1977)
No Regrets music CDs
$11.65 The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP; all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section -- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination. This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad "These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ~ Scott Yanow

$9.59 | | Miles Davis In A Silent Way CD (1969) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
No Regrets album
$6.75 John McLaughlin (electric guitar); Dave Holland (bass); Tony Williams (drums).
With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation.
Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (who doubles on organ), they create layer upon layer of choral ...

| | Kitaro An Ancient Journey CDs (2002)
No Regrets music CDs
$15.54 AN ANCIENT JOURNEY was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best New Age Album.
Although this set is entitled AN ANCIENT JOURNEY, in the hands of Kitaro history is only half the story. The musician creates an atmospheric sense of space, and refuses to clutter it up, leaving one to feel that he's speaking as much about the future as the past. At the very least, he suggests that the spiritual truths unlocked by ancient civilizations have yet to be fully realized.
Of course, this drama is also achieved by conventional Kitaro methods--the electronic droplets of "Whisper," or the orchestral sweep of "Maya Magic," for instance--but less so than in other productions. For the most part, this is an understated, imagistic album, one that roams freely through time and space.
This two-disc set featuring 19 compositions is a wonderful glimpse into the great civilizations past through the eyes of musical pioneer and Grammy Award winning composer, Kitaro. In An Ancient Journey, Kitaro takes his audience on a trek to worlds far away. Listeners embark ...
