| | Jazzanova Remixed CD Jazzanova Discography of CDs
Throughout its entire career, Jazzanova has been largely renowned predominately for its high-quality remixes for various artists. Whenever a Jazzanova remix was presented, it was more often than not an event for downtempo fanatics rather than whoever was on the A-side. This time around, though, the tables have been turned and other artists take a stab at interpretations of songs from Jazzanova's 2002 full-length debut. Labelmates from the Compost community (Beanfield, Yukihiro Fukutomi, Moonstarr, and Kyoto Jazz Massive) all take a stab at remixing their friends, delivering the Brazilian-tinged downtempo concoctions that made Compost one of the most innovative labels of the '90s. But not content with keeping it in the downtempo/chill-out vibe, Jazzanova reaches out to hip-hop producers (Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, Madlib, P Smoovah) and broken beat heads (Ayro, Bugz in the Attic, Domu, Vikter Duplaix) as well as French indie post-rockers Stereolab -- who churn out an amazing remix of "Another New Day." This wide diversity in choosing the remixers is a smart move, as it gives a little bit of everything to people who like certain aspects of Jazzanova's work but not others. Giving new interpretations (two discs worth at that!) not only shows how strong an album In Between is, but gives it an entirely new life in the eyes of listeners who might not be hip to the eclecticism that is a hallmark of the Jazzanova sound. ~ Rob Theakston

$13.85 Taking their moniker from a Gilles Peterson quote, brothers Yoshihiro and Shuya Okino first caught the ear of the downtempo glitterati through a series of releases for Compost which successfully blended '70s fusion with broken beats and bossa cool. Their debut album continues from where these singles left off, with shimmering keywork playing amongst fatback bass and a set of talented vocalists. Despite the occasional falter on to the wrong side of the faux-jazz tracks -- Victor Davies sounding more Alexander O'Neil than nu soul ...

$11.35 Useful only to the most devoted Radiohead followers (who will probably have most of the contents to begin with), Com Lag is a patchwork of live material, remixes, B-sides, and other assorted scraps. Naturally, the release isn't nearly as cohesive as Hail to the Thief; its apparent intent is to supply the fans with another stream of the band's recordings, regardless of both how they fit together and how mixed the tracks are to begin with. The B-sides aren't nearly as solid as the ones collected on the Airbag/How Am I Driving EP, not to mention most of the intervening ...

Remixed
$6.79 Steve Morse (guitar, banjo, synthesizer); Allen Sloan (electric violin, viola, strings); Steve Davidowski (keyboards, synthesizer); Mark Parrish (keyboards); Andy West (bass).
This is part of Mercury Records "20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection" series.
The Dixie Dregs are one of those recording artists who have spread their catalog among competing labels, making a comprehensive compilation difficult to assemble. This midline-priced effort draws only from their initial stint at Capricorn Records, 1977-1979, with nothing from the Arista years (1980-1982), the second Capricorn sojourn (1992-1994, by which time the earlier Capricorn catalog was owned by PolyGram), or the Zebra period (2000). So, perhaps this album should be called something like "The Best of the Early Years." It draws three tracks from the band's first Capricorn album, Free Fall, and four each from their second, What If, and their third, Night of the Living Dregs. The Dixie Dregs never had a hit single, so the choice of their best recordings is subjective, but the selection here is reasonable and gives a sense of the breadth of their stylistic diversity, from the fusion music on Free Fall to the rock of "Punk Sandwich" from Night of the Living Dregs and the country hoedown of "Patchwork," recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978 and also included on Night of the Living Dregs. Guitarist Steve Morse, violinist Allen Sloan, and keyboardists Steve Davidowski (on the first three tracks) and Mark Parrish (on the rest) each get to play intricate, fleet-fingered solos, and the rhythm section of bassist Andy West and drummer ...

$14.15 After appearing on the soundtrack to the hit TV show The OC, Alexi Murdoch could have easily followed Death Cab for Cutie onto the major label merry-go-round and let a bevy of A&R folks shape him into Next Big Thinghood. Instead, the Scottish singer/songwriter's self-released debut full-length bears haunting similarities to the likes of Nick Drake's Pink Moon, hardly the way to mainstream stardom no matter how many car commercials it inspires. Nearly a third of the album will be familiar to those who already have Murdoch's 2004 EP Four Songs, three-quarters of which is reprised here, including "Orange Sky," the aforementioned small-screen favorite. ("It's Only Fear" is the sole track that didn't make the leap, insuring collector-geek status for the EP.) The remaining eight songs are, in the best possible sense, ...
