MAKE UP THE BREAKDOWN, despite being Hot Hot Heat's first full-length album, is a bright, assured blast of fresh air that's at its dayglo best on tracks such as the tricky pop of "Naked in the City Again" and the punky "Bandages." But the strong hint that Hot Hot Heat have more to offer than your everyday retro-wavers is contained in the wiry guitar sounds of "Save Us S.O.S." and the atmospheric closer "Cairo," as well as in the off-kilter rhythms and smart, wry lyrics that pop up throughout.
'Make Up The Breakdown' is the second album release for the Canadian angular post-punk pop act, who have been compared to XTC & The Cure. It follows 2002's 'Scenes One Through Thirteen' which brought together tracks from their early EPs. 10 tracks. Limited edition UK reissue is scheduled to include UK versions of the two songs 'No Not Now' & the single 'Bandages'. B-Unique. 2003.
OK, name a band of Canadians with ska/punk/New Wave overtones, snappy lyrics and a catchy way with a tune. If you were thinking Barenaked Ladies, think again--Hot Hot Heat are all of the above, but with the added advantage of Steve Bays's patented Ray Davies-in-a-blender hiccupped vocals and a musical edge given extra depth by producer Jack Endino's nuanced production. There are echoes of '80s skinny-tie pop here, to be sure, but the combination of quirkiness, energy, and wit most obviously recalls British new wavers XTC and their particular brand of multi-layered new wave/art-rock.

John Denver's music always had a warm, home-spun quality to it, so it isn't surprising that his 1975 holiday effort, Rocky Mountain Christmas, is a wonderfully low-key and friendly Christmas album. New Birth Brass Band are one of the groups to come out of the new wave of brass band music in New Orleans, started by the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Fusing traditional brass band music with contemporary sounds is the genius of this style. Its spiritual father was the late, great Danny Barker, who set up a school for brass musicians so that the old ways would not die out. But the new way is strictly now and funky, as the music of New Birth Brass Band attests. The group was founded by trumpeter James Andrews, known as "Satchmo of the Ghetto."
